Some laser printers have their drums and toners built in together as a single unit while others have their drums and toners built separately. Knowing this distinction is important because as you've personally experienced buying one where the 2 are separate will end up costing you in the long term. Even though the drums stay functional for a long time (much longer than the ink cartridges) they WILL have to be eventually replaced and they're not cheap. That's why choosing a laser printer where they're both built in is imperative. If I'm not mistaken all canon laser printers fulfill this (unless something has changed for this year's models which I'm not aware of).
On the other hand, I always chuckle when SDer's jump on Brother laser printers when they come on sale here often since the vast majority of them with a few models being the exception come with separate drums and toners. A costly mistake IMHO.

Bottomline is that the Brother is a better printer for less money. (That is if you don't need the absolute best B&W doc quality).
