Looks like toner costs are at least $120+ for even generic ones

If this is your first time using Brother laser, make sure you know that it's actually not laser but LED. Canon and HP use the real laser. The difference is when you have to print a high dpi photo on a flyer or brochure. Brother laser LED will not be able to print in High Detail like what Canon or HP laser can do. I learned this from personal experience.

This uses 067 style refills. Much pricier than the 054 model refills. No duplex is weak, but those refill prices might be a dealbreaker.

only $30 off? Doesn't seem that slick to me.
You're always welcome to post the better deal you've found elsewhere, which I don't see you doing. This deal seems to offer a lot of value based on the general response to it.

I have a xerox work center 6515 laser color printer. The printer I got cheap for nearly half off. The toner sets are super cheap, like $33. What's not cheap is the ink recovery drums.. I think the cheapest single drum is $100. And a full set (of 4) ranges from $377 to $500. I don't print often, and I felt cheated cause they brag about "up to 25,000 pages!" for each drum.
Ding ding... this is what most people miss when researching laser printers while they just focus on 3rd party cartridge availability.

Some laser printers have their drums and toners built in together as a single unit while others have their drums and toners built separately. Knowing this distinction is important because as you've personally experienced buying one where the 2 are separate will end up costing you in the long term. Even though the drums stay functional for a long time (much longer than the ink cartridges) they WILL have to be eventually replaced and they're not cheap. That's why choosing a laser printer where they're both built in is imperative. If I'm not mistaken all canon laser printers fulfill this (unless something has changed for this year's models which I'm not aware of).

On the other hand, I always chuckle when SDer's jump on Brother laser printers when they come on sale here often since the vast majority of them with a few models being the exception come with separate drums and toners. A costly mistake IMHO.

Fwiw, I've had a canon mf735cdw for the past 6 years or so. The toner is ridiculously expensive, about 300-400 for original toner if you're replacing all 4. Tried going the :rd party route twice and immediately regretted it (streaks, inconsistent colors, dull black). Just something to be aware of. That being said, I still haven't found a replacement for it after all these years cause the machine works, has been reliable, and has decent features (but the toner …)

I have both Canon and Brother lasers (all monochrome). I'm about 2.5 years owning my Brother and still on the original drum. When it finally wears out (no telling when that will be, it still works like new), a new aftermarket drum cartridge can be had for $15. By no stretch would I consider that a costly mistake; in fact I prefer the build quality of the Brother over the bricked Canon AIO it replaced. My 2 other Canons (print only) have been very reliable and both have drum built into the toner cartridge. I spend very little to keep all my laser printers running. If I had to buy a new laser printer today, it would be a Canon or a Brother, with the best deal currently available on either likely getting the nod.

Yeah color lasers aren't cheap to run, and the consumer grade color laser technology has plateaued well short of photo quality. There's not much the average user can do besides steering clear of color altogether, or implementing an online service or print shop for their color printing on an as needed basis. Some people are willing to pay for the convenience of having a color printer around, and in a lot of business situations it can be justified. Even in the best of circumstances, it's still expensive. I make do with monochrome, which by comparison is a sweet deal.

That might be true for monochrome ones but a completely different story for color laser printers that require multiple toners and drums.

For comparison the Brother MFC-J4335DW, $180 at Amazon, has the following:

Has ADF, 2-sided printing, and FAX.
No duplex scanning.

I recently picked up the sister MFC-J4535DW with two paper trays and a large touchscreen for $179. But that price only lasted 1 day on Amazon. I've been super happy so far.

As repeatedly mentioned here, these are new models and going by prior history the price of generic aftermarket toners will come down eventually..

Apples to oranges. You're trying to compare your brother inkjet printer to a laser printer so I'm not really sure what you're trying to prove here.

The test results are apples to apples. Inkjet, laser, or a monkey, the way you get there doesn't matter.

Bottomline is that the Brother is a better printer for less money. (That is if you don't need the absolute best B&W doc quality).
