If you are going to use the 20 lb tank I highly recommend you use one of the Mr. Heater fuel filters with any generic hose OR buy the hose F273704. Otherwise oil will leach into the fuel stream and more than likely clog and ruin your heater. Numerous videos and articles about this issue out there.

Maybe a decent deal, but I'll never order from Northern Tools again. They screwed over a bunch of Slickdealers including me last year. They advertised a free Milwaukee inflator with battery purchase. Then shipped just the batteries with no inflator (and no notification of order change). When confronted,v they claimed the free inflator was a mistake, despite the fact it was still advertised as an active promotion on their site. They wouldn't even pay return shipping for the batteries.

It's the only time in 25 years of buying stuff online I've had to dispute a charge with my credit card.

Sure, any company can make a mistake, but the handled it in the worst way and were downright hostile towards their customers.

Caveat emptor.

Same here. I asked for partial refund and it was a great deal to keep the batteries.

Yes. It is due to the hoses that have to be used. The oil/contaminates from the hose leach into the heater and slowly destroy it.
How is propane in a small cylinder different from propane in a 20lb cylinder?

It isn't any different. The difference is that the small cylinders screw directly onto the heater itself. The 20 lb tanks have to be connected by a rubber hose that contains contaminates/oil in the hose that leach into the heater and that is what ruins it. That is why a filter or the special hose that Mr Heater makes has to be used.

Given the new research out regarding benzene produced by propane and natural gas stoves I would not use this thing inside. Maybe in a garage with the door wide open but even then I'd be hesitant: https://www.npr.org/2023/06/16/11...-to-cancer
Keep in mind there is a big push to get all consumers to switch everything to grid power. You can speculate as to why on your own but they want our cars to charge on grid and our ovens and hot water heaters to be plugged in. There will always be a standard answer given as to why, it's rarely accurate.

The ability to connect to the 1lb containers and later to a larger 20lb tank make this a versatile easily portable heat solution. If you're ever worried about pipes freezing in a certain area, a certain wall, it's easy to carry this right to that area and heat it up.

I bought 2 of these and they came with a fan... QA indicates that they come with a fan, but you'd need to confirm that. I find that the fan makes a big difference. The ones I got looked like new.

Thanks for the validation. That's about what was thinking.

I need a patio heater. Next I have to look in to natural gas adapters and such.

Wanted this for backup if safe indoors too. oh well.

Use a diesel heater. You can get an all-in-one unit from Vevor for around $100 direct with email sign up. I paid $103, no MT tax, for a 5k unit. All you need is 12V 15A power.

Vancity Vanlife has one with a 2x4 spacer under his garage door. It gets better heating than an expensive electric heater, but maintenance can be required and reliability isn't always the best, but for $100, you'll save that in electricity, and it's quicker. I've used the larger 18k propane shop heaters, and they can be great at heating quickly, but not safe for long-term, and you have to ventilate. Diesel heaters don't require opening a window for ventilation because they have an exhaust vent. I'm planning on trying it in the winter for working on my bus while in storage. You can also put the unit outside and run the vent into a window of a car or a tent.

Got it, tnx. I thought there is some converter regulator to alow this.
With propane vs natural gas it has less to do with the regulator pressure and more to do with a change in the orifice sizes where the gas exits into the burner tube/manifold.
In that type of conversion a change in orifice size is necessary.

Many states and canada outlawed the fan model, FYI. And....

Really??

18,000 BTU Big Buddy Portable Propane Heater (No Fan),Red https://a.co/d/6sFcxi4

Funny how they dont anymore. It was outlawed in Canada and Massachusetts. So they don't make those models with fans anymore.
why people make up things like this i have no idea.

they absolutely do make them with fans. i literally just saw one on the shelf at tractor supply.

the fan thing is a TAX issue... (heater without fan = low import tax, WITH = different tax class)

here's a link to buy it from sam's club:
http://www.samsclub.com/sams/a/P03020243.ip

***the sam's club deal HAS a fan, an a/c adapter, AND the adapter hose (albeit a short one) for a full size propane tank

So you are correct about the TAX

Due to recent governmental changes to import tariffs, Mr. Heater has removed the fan on some models of the Mr. Heater Big Buddy® (MH18B). We apologize for the inconvenience and confusion this has caused some customers. Please feel free to contact Mr. Heater Technical Service with any questions by phone at (800)-251-0001 or email on the Contact Us form.

But you are wrong in your item. That's the Big Buddy PRO! Which is a different model than the one shown in this thread.

So I was right in my statement before and your proved it. THANKS!
