Maybe to defeat corporate IT software from thinking you're goofing off at home when it detects you not using the keyboard or mouse for long intervals.

Some corporations track objective metrics like the duration you're 'active' (make mouse movements, keystrokes) during a workday as a proxy for employee productivity. If you're someone who tends to work for a really focussed session for a few hours and then take a break for a while, delivering same or better productivity, you'd still be hurt by these metrics. These devices help to improve such metrics.

Or maybe if someone just wants to stay away from their work computer for a while, but didn't want to appear offline or 'Away' for colleagues on Teams or Slack.

I know a lot of people working from home are trying to game the system or deal with lazy coworkers who seem to be monitoring your productivity to make up for their lack thereof however mechanical devices such as this, the trick of placing a heavy object on your keyboard to force constant keypresses, etc to make it appear you are working might trick Microsoft Teams (or the like) however any productivity tracking software is likely to be looking for patterns such as this above all else. Constant mouse movements without key presses, constant key presses without mouse movement, not accessing any networked files and so on are going to be even a bigger red flag than nothing at all. Heck, with NOTHING you can at least argue you are involved with long work related phone calls or offline "research" without devices like this but when the cost cutters come to you asking why your mouse activates once every 10 seconds yet you haven't touched the keyboard in 2 hours...that will be harder to explain Wink

Just my opinion.

To let people cheat their employers. Since so many WFH now use software to track mouse metrics and keyboard too.
why would they do that. just look at their productivity vs time. why hired them when you dont have anything for them to do. just throw a bunch of job jackets to them. as an employer you should know how much time they needed for that job.

This single device is the proof of the level of stupidity of corporate America, so many idiots are making money out of other idiots that make money off more idiots!

Yes... tell me more tales of installing 3rd party freeware on company laptops. I too enjoy a rousing story of Darwinian corporate career termination

These things are used by law enforcement - when executing a warrant on someone's property, they plug these into any computer they find unlocked when they burst in.

E.g. recently - https://www.cnbc.com/2023/10/17/crypto911.html

Some people just don't want their PC's to lock because they went to their kitchen to make some snack or coffee.
