There are other similar products made with metal and wood. I forget the brand(s) but I know they exist. I have one. And I've seen them on S.D.
A plastic workbench? That can only end badly.
Depends on what you need it for. A space to store tools, e.g. if you're finishing a basement or something? plastic table will probably be OK unless you put a lot of weight on it. This type of item is designed to be worked ON, meaning cutting, sawing, hammering, clamping, etc.

For plywood what I've found that works VERY well, especially for large rip cuts, is a 2" piece of EPS on the floor (preferably flat, e.g. poured concrete works very well), plywood on top, and you cut it allowing the saw to penetrate the plywood and cut the EPS. The EPS will be just fine, won't hurt the saw blade nor the workpiece. Plus this allows you to get a better angle at long cuts, especially if you choose to use an assist device like a Kreg/etc track saw.
I started using this technique when had to make several finish cabinets for my last home (as I couldn't find what I needed commercially), and in cabinets cuts need to be very accurate and very straight/square.
The EPS is a bit of an investment (e.g. it's not cheap, a 2"x4x8' sheet is like $50) but it will last many many cuts.
You want to do as much as possible to try to mitigate risk to prevent loss of fingers.
Wood pieces can get caught and fling back so hard to cause holes in the dry wall.
you always want a good foundation.
