To connect to your SmartTag, you will need a Samsung Galaxy mobile device on which you can install the SmartThings app. SmartTag is compatible with Samsung Android OS 8.0 and higher. Other Android devices and iOS devices are not supported.

Any clue why it's already selling on woot? My guess is it doesn't support Google's upcoming find my device service, and Samsung is attempting to get a bunch sold before Google launches the new service? Anyone know?

Because version 2 of anything is always identical to version 1, right?

Do these work tracking stuff from distance, like if I want to track my car or luggage? If not, what should I get?
yes, as long as you have Samsung phone, this is what you get

Is this any better than version 1? I'm assuming Samsung users have to opt in to allow their phones to be used as a connection point. iPhones are already opted in which is why I used airtag on my dog. I used 4 smarttags version 1 for traveling in Japan. Our bags were stuck due to a Strom and the version 1 gave really late updates.
supposed to be much better, first one Tag+ did not have good battery life, although basic tag worked fine. This new one is next version of plus, and they discontinued the basic one.

It's not sold out, "Appsclusive" apparently means you have to buy it through the Woot App and not via the provided link. It's available there as of now.

yes, if you have samsung phone. Samsung devices are everywhere worldwide, from low to high end, making samsung network probably larger than apples. (US is probably much more apple centric)
This would be true IF samsung was as persuasive as apple about enabling the feature. When you buy an iphone and sign into icloud, the first thing it asks you is "do you want to be able to find your iphone remotely" and of course people will say YES without thinking about the fine print at all. With Samsung, you have to install smartthings and then it asks you very clearly "do you want to be part of the location network". A lot of people say no to that. Technically, you can still find your phone remotely after saying no.

I have tested the two side by side and the Apple tags get way more location updates than the Samsung tags, it's not even comparable. if i put one in my kids' backpack on the bus to school (a 4 mile drive) the airtag will update at least 15 times, the samsung tag will update once, sometimes twice.

GOOD enough: for finding luggage. Someone near the bags will have a samsung phone and you will realize which city your lost luggage is in. NOT good enough: finding highly mobile targets like pets or kids. You need an airtag or a true tracking device for that.

Replace the coin battery. Should last between 500-700 days though depending on what battery mode you use

Why do you need a Samsung Galaxy device, I have a Google Pixel phone and I use the Smart things App and it works well with the Pixel phone.

You don't need to install smart things to find your phone, but you do need to install it to use and connect with lots of other Samsung devices like watches, buds, TV's, my dishwasher, my refrigerator, etc. Ergo almost everyone with a Samsung has it installed.

Is Samsung pushing deals on these tags because Google Nest Locator Tag coming soon?

Too bad these don't work with other phones, if anything, the bluetooth part.
Other than some hints in Android source code in Jan 2023, has there been any more evidence Google is introducing support for an Android locator service? It would be good to know if Samsung will support it.
Tile has saved me a few times. It's a shame they blew their market lead. Their promised UWB locator, announced in 2021, is still MIA.
