I've had one for a few years now. Love the power and the stainless steel attachments, but it has one huge design flaw.

The part that rotates and the whisk attaches to has a direct connection to the internal mechanism and as soon as the motor heats up this black grease begins to come out around the attachment area. It's not a lot, but it's still disgusting and gets in the dough if I don't remove it in time.

KitchenAid insists that it's normal and that it's safe for my family's consumption. I'd love to feed a spoonful of it to their CEO.

This is an awesome price on a very high end mixer. If you want an even less expensive alternative, they do sell this refurbished without the guard at https://www.kitchenaid.com/refurbished/stand-mixers/p.refurbished-nsf-certified-commercial-series-8-... [kitchenaid.com]

Stock goes in and out quite often multiple times a day and shipping is pretty slow, so expect it to arrive in a couple of weeks.

That sounds like the tolerances on the opening were not tight enough if its happening often. It is meant to allow some through to lubricate the opening, and it is rated for incidental food contact.

You can open it up and replace the grease with new grease that is lighter colored and not black. The black concerns me that the gears may have worn down some. There are multiple companies that sell the grease like this https://www.amazon.com/KitchenKip...09VKGQD82/

That's a common issue on all their stand mixers. I had a smaller 4.5qt that developed the same leak.

They fix is basically regreasing the assembly where the leak is coming from. You can find tutorials online.

I read that even lack of use could cause it to happen.

These are about 5 inches taller than the standard ones I'd guess, measure first if you need it to fit under a counter...I wish I would've, but now I just store it out of the way since I've stopped using it much.

edit: and yes the grease does eventually "disappear", have repacked mine once in 3 years so not a huge deal.

Imagine noticing smell after you used meat grinder... Was unscrewing it to the ashes and back

Lead safe mama tested the attachments for the non commercial version one and all parts came back as having high lead in them. She currently has a petition going for kitchen aid to recall the parts. They are aware of this but don't care. I'd never buy another kitchen aid product…

This doesn't surprise me since their non commercial mixer attachments tested high for lead and other metals when lead safe mama tested them. She currently has a petition going for the parts to be recalled. Kitchen aid is aware of this but doesn't care.

I'm not surprised either. See, I didn't buy this right away and started out with their regular consumer mixers. After a while those aluminum attachments begin to look like something that nobody should have anywhere near their food, so in order to have stainless steel I had to upgrade to this.

Imagine my disappointment when I realized that it was leaking grease into my food negating the purpose of that purchase, while KitchenAid refused to do anything about it because according to them it was "normal."

Nickle Pearl color is available. That's a great price. I heard their refurbished look brand new.

Anyone know how this (with the DC motor) compares to a Bosch?
I have a bosch and love it. I run a popup out of my garage once a month and push my mixers to the limits. The only limitation of the bosch is space in the bowl, which is triple the space of the kitchen aid. Handles it no problem. The bosch is more difficult to clean, but superior

Wow, interesting, whats your popup like?
What model of bosh mixer do you have, and what is the capacity?
I can run 3kg of dough in my KA pro but no more than that and i just replaced gears (10+ years old mixer), would like to upgrade to larger capacity but I also need bigger oven Smilie

looks to be an amazing piece of machinery but sadly I do not feed enough people to warrant this purchase. Will be sticking with my 6qt KA instead.

This is far from a high end mixer. Maybe for regular consumer use it might be better than your Artisan series or your cheapo $100 mixers at Walmart.

Might be labeled as commercial but would not last in a commercial kitchen.

I do want all that stuff greasing the gears and internals. I wouldn't want it in my food. I've owned several kitchenaid mixers and never had any grease escape the motor/trans housing. I think that's a unit specific defect and If it's still under warranty, I'd say double-down on KitchenAid for replacement
I have. It is only when it gets really hot, when I knead bread dough for 10+ minutes.

Although this mixer runs much cooler (I assume because of the DC motor), have kneaded dough for 20 minutes without issues. Old one (5.5 quart) would be too hot to touch after 10 minutes.
