Still a wonderful set. I bought a very similar Kobalt set for $80 6 or 7 years ago. Mine came with a few more normal sockets, but I didn't get the Hex and Torx sockets and had to buy the Torx for some job. Tons of suspension, brake, and engine bay jobs totalling well over $10K. Only two issues. The magnet fell out of the screwdriver handle (I should have easily glued it back in, but I lost it). The rubber in the 5/8" spark plug socket got old and stopped grabbing spark plugs well. The sockets and ratchets have zero issues. I've torqued lug nuts up to 150 ft-lbs. and run smaller sockets on an impact driver.

Just some of the things I've done with this along with a breaker bar and some things like swivels from Harbor Freight: All sort of fluid changes. Changed brakes and rotors. Changed many struts and coilovers. Changed timing belt. Replaced sway bar end links. Control arms. Replaced all manner of engine seals on cranks and cams. Set valve clearances. Dozens of spark plugs. Water pumps. Starter. Radiators. Swtiched a throttle body injected engine to port injection. Exhaust. Replaced an in-tank fuel pump. A/C blower fan. Window motors. Many lag bolts and dozens of other construction tasks. Intake manifold gaskets. Thermostats. Many more things I can't think of. Not a single failure.
Geez people have a fixation for acting "superior". For $100 it's not a bad deal for someone wanting to start a set
Dublin, CA Lowe's had half a dozen of these on the closeout shelf for $69.

They aren't professional grade so really does not matter.

I bought this for my kid a while back. Do you have basic mechanical ability? Stow in your trunk and if you lose an alternator its no big deal.

It's a perfectly good set for $100. The Channel Lock set Sam's Club often sales for $90 is also better than it has any right to be at that price. I'm glad to see the Kobalt label still showing signs of life. Kobalt never pretended to be great tools. It's more good enough at a great price. Lowe's blundered when they tried to pull off the opposite with Craftsmen. Those are good enough-ish tools that are marketed as great tools.

Great set to have around I have it. Only complaint is obviously the blow molded drawers suck and are a pain to open and close

How does this set compare to the Pittsburgh 301 piece one from Harbor Freight?

Purchased this a few years ago on sale for $99 and its a nice entry level tool set but as mentioned before the drawers sucked. Many times I would open them and then couldn't close it. When I purchased it there was also a $99 Husky tool set on sale. Might wanna check out the husky one if it's on sale.

Do you see 12-16 combination wrenches in the other competition $100 deal sets from Home Depot's Husky set or Craftsman set? No.

This Kobalt set has 8 combination wrenches. Is the Kobalt that much different with its bits than Husky and Craftsman sets? Notice how the Husky 270 piece set $99 sale (retail $199) also has 8 combination wrenches? Notice how the Craftsman 262 piece set $149 sale (retail $279) also has 8 combination wrenches? They are quite similar spec sheet with the bits. Even the Harbor Freight Pittsburgh 301 piece set has 8 combination wrenches. See the trend.

Bits (also known as fillers to others)? I believe I am seeing 60 bits with the kobalt set. With the husky set, I believe it is 80 bits. Craftsman looks like 60 bits.

It is what it is. I remember when I paid like $85 for 201 piece U.S. Made Craftsman tool set from Sears that came with 21 combination wrenches (small to big and not a bunch of minis) and 4 flare nut wrenches .. that snapped into the case and also a plastic bag for other larger wrenches. That was 12 years ago. Those days are gone to get so many wrenches under a $100 set. Steel is more expensive nowadays than 20 years ago.

* Lot of combination wrenches adds a ton of weight on the carrying case handle too where it could be an issue of breaking the single swivel handle. This Kobalt set weighs 26 pounds. If you add a legit combination wrench set, you will most likely need to get rid of the single top swivel handle.

* There is a 200 piece channel lock set ("suit case design set" that does have 14 combination wrenches at Sam's for $99.98. DeWalt sets seem to carry more wrenches too but it costs more and the warranty replacement won't be as solid as something from craftsman, kobalt and husky.

* Wow. My old USA craftsman 201 piece set came with 25 wrenches and only 9 screwdriver bits. $85 deal. Times have changed.

I have this. First they are not low quality or super high quality something mediocre for a good price. Second they reduced the quality from the time I got it. I know that since I had to replace some. Unfortunately everything is getting worse in quality not only tools . House built quality , tools, appliances, cars,… third , my only complain is the box. Not easy to use and falls apart. Not sure if other brands are better. Just plastic box with that type of connections and lock not robust enough for this amount of tools ,…
