For verizon phone, no need to keep the line open for 60 days,
1. you can activate the phone on new line
2. Pay off the phone via customer service or in cash at verizon corporate store.
corporate stores are inclined not to take payment in cash. they may be aware of what folks are doing . thus they try to make it hard for you.
if corporate store denies u. politely but firmly insist u spoke with rep of verizon. and they assured u this can be done in corporate store. if still denied, ask for manager. if still denied, go to another corporate store.
3. cancel the line within 3 days and no activation fee . Pro-rated charges for line for 1-2 days only. do not worry about what bill says.
4. Phone will be automatically unlocked in 60 days. No matter you use it on existing VZN line or keep it in drawer . even if u r no longer a customer , since u cancelled in three days. the phone will still unlock.
5. new customer, there will be a credit pull .most likely hard. existing customer. most likely a soft credit pull. remember this is post paid service.
6. if existing customer. consider: adding a line. then follow steps above, u can also simply port out the line u opened up. effectively cancelling the line. and not effect the other lines

I am not a current Verizon customer.
I ordered from Walmart Sunday (10/29) night.
Tax was $3 and change.
Phone arrived today (10/31 tuesday).
Activation was easy and basically completed by the phone itself with a new number.
I then set up an account on Verizon.com.
There already a bill in the system for a little more than $120 for activation, month of service and taxes.
Next bill estimate showed about $80.
After playing with the phone a few hours, I contacted Verizon by chat to cancel the account to make sure I am not charged an activation fee and so that Verizon only bills me the prorated use amount for 1 day.
Long story short, Verizon waived the activation fee, charged the full $36 for the phone and gave me a random credit that did not cover most of the monthly fee and taxes.
I think at first, they wanted a total of about $70 ($36 plus like $34 in fees).
I told the representative that made no sense given that I am cancelling the account within 1 day so the prorated cost should be about 3 or 4 dollars at most.
Chat representative gave me the run around but started applying what appeared to be random discounts.
At the end of the chat and subsequent follow up phone call, I was able to get the service fee reduced from $34 to $0.
Frankly, this was more trouble than it was worth.
Given that Verizon's unlock policy automatically unlocks the phone upon purchase (as opposed to activation), I expect this phone will unlock in 60 days

I also found out that cellphone companies aren't allowed to do hard inquiries, only soft

i also dont like the difficulty in cancelling.
V seems to give hard time for those wanting to cancel in 3 days. understandably so.
. just too much uncertainty for me.
especially for a a53 or apple 13 phone.
i will still look out for deals this poster has , and may participate in 1 if it is to my liking.and the price is right.
maybe a fold 4 etc
You don't have to go the store. I did and they won't cancel. I came home and chat gave me runaround. I called and was able to first pay it off - after she said I couldn't - through a secure link - and then I called back and canceled with a different rep. The one who took the $36 says if I cancel I can still pay after it will still be $36. I read the agreement again and total owed on device is $36 period.
Prorated and activation are the ones to worry about. If done correctly prorated should be $5-10 bucks and activation waived as long as you cancel by day 3.
Net you can cancel day 1 or 2 first and call back and pay the $36. Make sure the line is OFF. One rep lied to me and left it on through end of billing cycle. I called back and got an immediate disconnection. I paid the $36 first but you may be given a hard time doing it that way. So cancel first.

they have provided tips etc.
have u tried in corporate V stores?
have u tried calling again? or doing via chat?
Going into a store was a waste, if not for the problems activating this was a relatively painless process.
1. Phone came yesterday
2. Activate/setup with CSR this morning
3. Went to cooperate store this afternoon and they said no, wait to 14th
4. Got home call CSR for device payoff, 2hrs with them and got it canceled and got conformation
5. Hope that helps, im going to cancel tomorrow, time to unwind
1. Received the phone 3 days after placing the order.
2. As soon as I received, I turned-on the phone. It self activated and setup.
3. Called CSR and said I want to cancel my service. She said you have to pay for the device.
4. The bill was already generated - 75 (monthly bill) + 35 (Activation) + 1 (Device monthly cost) + Taxes/Surcharges. = $122.98
5. She said, they will give me credit on Nov 29th when my next bill is generated and I can pay the $36 device cost.
I hope that's oka and I won't be on hook to pay the 1 month bill + activation + taxes/surcharges.

First paragraph under 'Return and Postpaid service termination'
"You may terminate service for any reason within 30 days of activation. You will remain responsible for your Activation Fee unless you terminate service within three days of activation."

They have the option for one time payment of $49.99; about $13.99 ($49.99 - $36) more expensive vs Walmart's deal
Also includes 1 month of gamepass for Xbox users out there
