Usually they are available at a better price than an internal HDD.
Also if you plan to follow a solid backup strategy,
I recommend getting refurb(used) drive from spd. Can get 18tb drived for about 160 - 180$ and they charge no tax.

How do you know that it's not a 6-8k (minimum, could be more) hour drive, and someone just reset the smart data to "pretty it up"?
