There are cheaper options for long tern occasional use. For instance you would only need 5,400 RPM if you are not accessing it all the time

There is a reddit group called "Datahoarders." they are very helpful with questions like this.

I'd like to get some large drives to serve as long-term storage that is infrequently accessed (with additional drives for backups occasionally made and cycled off-site). I think these are meant for active server use, and suspect the infrequent use might actually decrease their life span.

Am I right about that? If so, then might I ask you all to please suggest more appropriate drives for my purpose? It's been a LONG time since I did any serious IT work, and I'm very out of the loop nowadays.

I forgot about that sub, thanks! I've been deliberately avoiding Reddit since they forced my preferred Android clients to go under this past summer, but occasionally I just have to hold my nose and use theirs to get what I need. I'll spend some time researching the sub's FAQ & such before posting - I'm sure I can't be the only one asking such questions at least every so often.

How about a large external drive like wd easystore (best buy exclusive) or wd elements ?
Usually they are available at a better price than an internal HDD.

Also if you plan to follow a solid backup strategy,
I recommend getting refurb(used) drive from spd. Can get 18tb drived for about 160 - 180$ and they charge no tax.

How do you know that it's not a 6-8k (minimum, could be more) hour drive, and someone just reset the smart data to "pretty it up"?
