These portable heaters have a thermal fuse which often burns up causing them to stop working. I've had the same thing happen in a totally different heater. The fuse can be replaced but it's a major PITA and may require soldering.

Wife bought one last year. Stopped working after a few weeks of use and we couldn't get it to turn on again. Returned it because it was still within the return window

Got it for ~$15 at the beginning of summer. Works well in my home office with the door closed. Gets toasty after a while.

Has these gotten better with energy consumption? I used to have one in college and my usual electrical bill was around $20 and one month I used these and got over $100 bill
Well they're not heat pumps so they won't exceed 100% efficiency. But electrical resistive heating is generally 100%.

FYI: With these heaters, you have to plug them directly into the wall and not a power strip. It caused my last one to burn out and voided the warranty, too! I called Lasco and they asked directly " Did you have it plugged into a wall or a power strip? " It states in the manual to not do that. In for another one and I added the cheap Allstate 2 year insurance, too.

What are the increments you can set the thermostat at? I bought one and didn't know that it was by 5 degrees. So if it 70° in the room it will not shut off till it gets to 75°.
Umm, mine can be set by 1 digit increments.

Just unboxed and plugged mine in. It is very nice and really powerful, smooth and quiet, even in low mode, probably my best cheap heater yet. The oscillation seems smooth. Timer can be set in half hour increments and temperature in single digit increments.

Electric heaters are about 99% efficient.

You're confusing efficiency and energy cost. My little space heater I have in my bedroom is more efficient than my whole house gas furnace. But my gas furnace is cheaper to heat the whole house up as gas BTU is cheaper than electricity.

So buy the cheapest electric heater as they are all about the same efficiency. But they are only good at keeping 1 room warmer to save from heating the whole house. That is how I use mine.

Slightly very slightly and they wont get much better, if any at all. Devices designed to provide heat will never be great with energy consumption. In all electrical devices other than heaters, any heat created is considered unwanted byproduct. How much heat an electrical device produces is how a devices efficiency rating is made. An electrical device that is supposed to perform any task, other than provide heat, the ammount of heat it does create is considered wasted or lost energy, or in other words, how efficient it is. Nothing is 100% efficient. That would be an electrical device that performs its task & creates zero heat. So what if the sole purpouse of a device was to only create heat? A very inefficient or a 100% efficient device depending on how you look at it. Since creating what all other devices consider wasted energy is its sole purpouse it can be viewed differently than other electrical device. All the ones that do not want to create heat.

I'm not seeing the original price of $49.99 on Targets website. Has the price been permanently adjusted instead of being on sale?
I can only find this on Target and eBay. Looks like it's going for $35-40 on eBay.

Bought the Costco one that's on sale for like $40 and now I don't know if I should have gotten this one instead. I mean, it's good but it dries the air a lot and my throat ends up hurting after about 30 minutes of use.

I bought the bigger one from Costco for $39.99 last week. So far so good. I like that it has a remote control.

I wish this had the safety feature of auto shut off if it's tipped over.

I also bought the $40 Costco heater last week. My wife's separate craft room/ she shed doesn't have heat so I wanted something to keep it from freezing this winter.

Not thinking I'll spend the time or gas money to return it to save 18 bucks.

Hmm, just tested mine and you are right, still runs when tipped over. Thought that was a mandatory safety requirement for these things, guess not.

I just got that yesterday as well and now this shows up. The 1500W sounds comparable but not sure if there's any other meaningful difference as the price is about half!
