Been swapping for years. Basically just switch between parties at same location via different emails and can even use different CCs if you wish. Doesn't matter even if other party is second, just can't go primary party to primary party w/o it being a renewal or breaking the listed rules. Same applies to Sam's Club.

It can make it messy, but as long as you keep proof of the membership number it was purchased under, never been a problem. They don't say can't return just because your membership is expired and don't have to have a current one to return stuff. Pro tip: Take pictures of reciepts as they often fade and while it isn't a big deal if bought under current membership, it makes it difficult if you do get new number every 12-18 months.

How do you swap every year if it takes 18 months to quilify as a new member again?

Good question. I either wait for a deal that has 6 or 12 months previous member rule vs. this deal, or go 6 months without. If swapping, one only needs 6 months plus the other party not being primary last on the 18 month rule. Plenty of Costco and Sams in my area, so don't need both year around, so only having one or the other until deal comes up isn't a big issue.

Does doing this prohibit you from returning an item previously purchased because the (old) primary member is the so-called second member now? Or if you have proof of purchase, the warranty is good regardless?

I'm wondering if they meant their membership was tied to the Citibank Costco Visa…
Perhaps so, but we don't get their branded Visa on purpose because we don't wish to be tied down to single person with no deal on the membership when it is time to renew. Now, if one buys enough stuff there yearly and/or can't swap with another person as primary, their card might be worth it.

I thought the membership is tied to state license # and I think Costco knows the history thru license. Pls correct me.

Are you saying they do not care if your membership is expired, and you can still return stuff you bought when you membership was valid?

Or you just gotta be an active member (secondary member at minimum), at the time of return processing as well?

Thanks.

Costco can change their return policy and it will apply to past purchases. You are at the mercy of Costco

For what it's worth this did not work the last time I tried it at Sam's in Iowa. I had let my membership expire and we signed up with my wife as primary, and when hers expired and I signed up under myself again, over a year after my previous membership expired, I was denied the sign up promotion. No communication there was any problem at the time of signup of course, but when I inquired a few weeks after signup as to having not received whatever the promotion was (I think it was a Sam's Club gift card), they said I wasn't eligible due to something along the lines of the 12-month rule being based on household, not person.

Just my experience.

It's more like they need your original membership number to which the original purchase was associated with. For returns, they scan your membership card first to get your membership number and then they scan the return item. Their system keeps track of purchases made with the membership. If you end up with a new membership years later, they'll still need the old number to track the earlier purchase made with the expired membership. You don't need to be a current member to return something you bought while previously being a member.

By the way, through the app, you can view all purchases made with your membership over the last 2 years. If you lost a receipt, you can show screenshots from the app receipts.

I am saying they are generous when it comes to most returns (they will not take something you bought at Sams and forgot which, don't ask how I know hehe). The return process is the same, doesn't matter if you have active membership at the time of the return or if it is even a different membership number, just have proof of the purchase with you and that has been fine in every case I have tested.
