Been swapping for years. Basically just switch between parties at same location via different emails and can even use different CCs if you wish. Doesn't matter even if other party is second, just can't go primary party to primary party w/o it being a renewal or breaking the listed rules. Same applies to Sam's Club.

It can make it messy, but as long as you keep proof of the membership number it was purchased under, never been a problem. They don't say can't return just because your membership is expired and don't have to have a current one to return stuff. Pro tip: Take pictures of reciepts as they often fade and while it isn't a big deal if bought under current membership, it makes it difficult if you do get new number every 12-18 months.

How do you swap every year if it takes 18 months to quilify as a new member again?

I thought the membership is tied to state license # and I think Costco knows the history thru license. Pls correct me.
Can't say what if anything they "tie" it too, but bought via Groupon, directly from them, other deal websites etc.. Sometimes it has been where you buy it straight then vs buying a certificate that you trade for membership. I can say that bought online one time even where I didn't even ever get thier "card", just via online, used their app in store, no membership counter process at all. Might have been relaxed rules at that time do to covid. I even recall Groupon purchase of membership, redeemed, they never sent whatever for claim to them and Groupon listed as never used and gave me the funds to use on another deal after it "expired" unused. Never know.

Costco can change their return policy and it will apply to past purchases. You are at the mercy of Costco
One could say this about any retailer. I think Costco in part sells the amount they do in part because of their return policy. Don't abuse it and hopefully they will continue the way they have been for years. Think they did tighten the policy on electronics, but YMMV.

It's just a matter of time until Costco changes their return policy. Everyone thought Netflix wouldn't crack down on password sharing but here we are.

For what it's worth this did not work the last time I tried it at Sam's in Iowa. I had let my membership expire and we signed up with my wife as primary, and when hers expired and I signed up under myself again, over a year after my previous membership expired, I was denied the sign up promotion. No communication there was any problem at the time of signup of course, but when I inquired a few weeks after signup as to having not received whatever the promotion was (I think it was a Sam's Club gift card), they said I wasn't eligible due to something along the lines of the 12-month rule being based on household, not person.

Just my experience.
This is disappointing to hear and sorry it happened that way. Perhaps there are several things that COULD cause this. If you bought both times from a deal directly from Sams vs 3rd party like Social or Groupon. Used same emails, credit cards, etc.. While unlikely, look at the sign up bonus as just that, a bonus. I would only join if I thought having membership is worth it regardless.

Can my friend (new member) sign up for this and add me as a secondary (current member but membership expires in Jan).

I'm also a secondary member under another friend membership.

I have the same question. But mine expired in December of last year as a secondary member.

Are you considered as a member if only secondary on an account?

How do you join under a friend's membership? Don't they want proof that you live at your friends' address?

You can always cancel Sam's club membership and get full refund if you are not satisfied. If you don't get bonus, you can cancel the membership. That is their policy.

Maybe you didn't mean reply to me. I know the refund membership options. I was just replying to comment about getting denied the bonus after the fact.

Is Costco worth it if you do not have one near you? i.e for mail orders?
