Been swapping for years. Basically just switch between parties at same location via different emails and can even use different CCs if you wish. Doesn't matter even if other party is second, just can't go primary party to primary party w/o it being a renewal or breaking the listed rules. Same applies to Sam's Club.

It can make it messy, but as long as you keep proof of the membership number it was purchased under, never been a problem. They don't say can't return just because your membership is expired and don't have to have a current one to return stuff. Pro tip: Take pictures of reciepts as they often fade and while it isn't a big deal if bought under current membership, it makes it difficult if you do get new number every 12-18 months.

How do you swap every year if it takes 18 months to quilify as a new member again?

Just a clarification to my previous post.. I was swapping primary and secondary memberships with my spouse each time (every 1.5 years) to get the promo, but it seems that this method no longer works. This is why the 18 month rule for the promo code wasnt working for me (they were able to see me listed as a secondary account holder on a more recent membership). Hope this isnt too confusing, it was to me thats for sure 😂
To confirm what (I believe) you're saying - if I was a primary w/ my partner as a secondary which recently expired, I shouldn't expect that I can now have my partner create a new primary account eventually adding me as their secondary? At least, in order to get this deal?

What difference does it make? It's not like it's going to go bad. Unless you mean, do I actually make enough trips to make the membership worthwhile, in which case, yeah, I do. A lot of those things will be a year's supply, but there are still lots of other things to buy. Also, most perishable items don't really come in the huge quantities that people like to joke about. Most items are about double the size of the standard Walmart offering, which is rarely a problem to deal with.
Yea, soaps will degrade overtime.
And if it's taking awhile to use it, then you have to think about all the money sunk into it.

And most of the food stuff is in larger quantities.

A single person's consumption just isn't enough to be worthwhile. I guess you could buy a large item to come out ahead but how often are you buying TVs?
Heck, you mentioned light bulbs, how often are you buying light bulbs?

Soaps may degrade over a long time, but there's certainly no appreciable difference in a year.

Average cost for groceries for a single person in the US is $350/month, which is $4200/year. If that person bought an average of 25% of their groceries at Costco (and I would say that the average Costco member would probably get a higher percentage of their groceries than that there), and saved an average of 20% on those items, that would be $210 saved, making the membership well worth it. When you then factor in the savings on all non-grocery items, plus the potential to share the membership with another person, it's really a no-brainer for most people.

I have a female friend who is in her late 40s and single. She has both Sam's Club membership and Costco membership. She said those stores have different stuff. She is not a deal hunter so she pays full membership fees every year. I don't know what she buys to make those club membership fees worthwhile.

My membership expired in January 2021 and it's saying the stacksocial code isn't valid. 18 month terms does not work. I'd avoid unless your a true new member. Now trying to get a refund.
I don't think they check that closely especially if you have an unusal name. Just change or leave out 1 letter. Mine expired last month I'm going to give it a shot.

Yes, that's the "rule"...but everyone shares accounts anyway.
Out here in Cali they don't care. I had this different ethnicty person who I met on reddit join with me last year... she even brought her husband. They could care less.

Correct, at least thats the way the Costco representative was explaining it. More specifically, that they dont care anymore about primary or secondary; once you are both in the system it goes by the most recent membership date for both individuals. This didnt used to be the case so its possible that they just became more strict about the terms over the years.

I think things have changed recently.. Been doing the same thing you mentioned for years as well, however my recent experience with a Costco customer support representative is leading me to believe otherwise. This time, they asked me for my date of birth and current address while I was on the phone seeking to clarify why the promo wasnt working. Based on the phone exchange it now seems that even with a change of e-mail address, a change in the spelling of a letter in the last name as one of the other commenters suggested, or a change of address as was commonly done before, they are more thorough about individual tracking. Might just not be worth the hassle anymore. Keep in mind, years ago the computer systems were more basic, so I doubt frankly that they cared.

Oh my, perhaps they have changed things and more will get denied promos now. Based on several comments, this seems more likely than before. So I would not count on the promo at this point if ANYONE in household has been member in last 18 months and/or wait for deal with less months as a requirement.

Costco is doing better than ever. Their most recent quarter showed a 15% increase in YOY net income.
