Indio by Monoprice Retro DLX Plus (Telecaster style) Solid Ash Electric Guitar with Gig Bag for $125 after coupon
BF25
hard to resist at this price but alas, I don't need a new guitar. This is the upgraded version with Wilkinson pickups and bridge. Reviews say it's heavy so keep that in mind if buying for a kid. With holidays coming up there will probably be more deals but this is pretty good, I don't think these upgraded models will go too much lower. Really solid guitar for this price, great for any beginner or a knock around guitar to leave out.

Monoprice has the 66SB which is their Les Paul knock off. Haven't tried one but probably similar quality to this. Looks like the DLX version of the 66SB is on sale currently.
A bit more at $200 but still a steal.. head over to musicians friend or guitar center website and look up the Mitchell MS-470 "restock". The restock is $199 and the bang for buck is incredible. Tusq nut, locking tuners, Alnico V pickups with coil tap, and quality strings from the factory.
Check your local market place.

Telecaster knock off is a good first guitar, neck easy to play and no whammy bar to mess with tuning.
I have the cheaper version of this and think it's great.
Kids would be better off with a 3/4 size guitar, which generally are designed for kids and are therefore already pretty lightweight. Look into a Squier mini Stratocaster or mini Jazzmaster. Once they are ready for a full size guitar (when they are at least 5 feet tall, give or take, depending on how long their arms are), Squier's Affinity and Classic Vibe Lines are the best budget guitars in my opinion. There are cheaper options in that realm, but Squier seems to have the most reliable quality control so you're less likely to have to go through the trouble of returning a guitar to an online retailer.
