For anyone who is curious what this device is used for...
One main option and huge benefit is when you're traveling and using hotel Wifi this device will set up its own wifi network that runs a VPN on the unit itself and all traffic funneled thru this device will be thru the VPN. so you only need to connect to the hotel wifi, accept the terms and conditions, turn on the VPN, and now all your devices are tunneled thru the VPN. so you don't need to set up your VPN on every device.

one example of my main use is that when we travel, I bring my chromecast and Amazon echo dot. because I set it up before we leave. When I turn it on and get connected, all my devices connect automatically and funneled thru the VPN. I'm able to stream my own shows thru the chromecast, and I can set timers, alarms, play audiobooks, music, etc, thru the echo dot.

I power it thru a USB charging block with 5 ports and charge all my devices over night and power this unit. but you can also power it thru a portable battery, which is one benefit of using this device over the newer ones. if you like you can also bring along a battery operated Wyze cam and use it to monitor the hotel room when your gone.

It's got VPN software to pair with your VPN service. It doesn't have a VPN itself.

I got this in 2020 for $20 new on Amazon. Is this good now with all the other newer Gli Net routers? I think it's very slow dated for vpn etc right ?

This is just VPN hardware instead of installing VPN client on each device. You still need to purchase a VPN service and configure this device to it.

Run wireguard server, free, on your home PC. Connect using this. Free, free, free. C'mon, man.

Very interesting! Thanks for the detail.

May I ask which charging block you use?

Another use for this is as a WiFi-to-Ethernet bridge.
I've used one of these to turn a printer with Fast Ethernet port but no WiFi into a WiFi printer. Worked great and was a lot cheaper than devices sold for that purpose (WiFi print server or other WiFi-to-Ethernet bridges).

I have a much older device that's supposed to do something similar, but it doesn't provide support for captive portals. So, two questions come to mind:

1) From what others have been saying it does sound like this device can support captive portal logins. Does it do this by passing the login page to a connected laptop or phone? Is GL.iNet's app required for handling the captive portal?

2) Is use of the VPN capability required?

Thanks in advance for any answers to my questions!

Do you think there is anyway software running on a laptop connected to this device can detect that it is using vpn (vpn server is openvpn on home gateway, not public vpn service)?

I use a different model from the same brand to do just this, and it worked well. Stuff that was blocked in-country was working fine as soon as I connected to a VPN based in a nearby, less restrictive country.

I am not in a hurry - I can wait until they start selling these BRAND NEW for 17.99. Spending 17.99 for a used/brooken version is too much money.

Not really, no. It's got slow Wi-Fi by modern standards and only 10/100 wired speeds, so throughout would not be great for using with all your activity. It's also not really designed for that kind of use and would be a pain to try and force it to be that. Best as a cheap VPN device, travel router, niche unit you have for a dedicated rig of some sort, etc.

If you want to improve your home network on the cheap, look into getting a Pi Zero W and installing PiHole on it to block various sites, block ads at the network level, monitor traffic, and all sorts of other cool stuff for $15. I would suggest grabbing a cheap case ($8) but it isn't necessary if you have a place to set it and use an old cellphone charger you have in a box somewhere to power it. The W you can use with wireless to connect it to your network without any noticeable performance loss and maybe even plug it right into your existing router for power too.
+1 for PiHole. I've got it running at home on a RPi 3B+ , and when I'm not at home I sure do notice it. Ads are insane. Unfortunately, most of the links on Slickdeals fail. :-)

Many websites and links fail... Including CNBC, Slickdeals, etc., with PiHole on Rpi.
I switched to AdGuard on my Rpi and it seems to not have these issues.

Right. So it doesn't do anything different than me running a VPN on my laptop then except it runs on a cute box instead of a big black foldable TV with a keyboard? And the benefit is...?
apparently it's able to identify jerkfaces, so there's that.

Actually, Samsung phones can share the wifi that it connects to via an alternate SSID.
I have that on my Samsung s23, but it doesn't allow Hotspot clients to use VPN, something that Lineage Android OS does actually.

I own another portable router from them. I want to pick up a second one to try to create a device based "tunnel" vpn network where only my two portable routers are on it and can be used to tunnel into my home LAN. Would this be possible? If so can anyone recommend how I might learn to do it or point me in the right direction?
