I had the Nespresso machine for a few years. It is very convenient, but the pods were very expensive… about $1.25 each… and it took two pods to make a decent-sized espresso shot. So $2.50 a drink.

And I was still going to cafes for cappuccino because the cafes made better cappuccino. During the Covid lockdown, I thought that maybe I could make a cappuccino at home that was as good as a cafe. I bought a Breville machine, a Sette 270 grinder, and a scale, and watched some YouTube videos.

Now I make my wife a delicious cappuccino every morning, first thing. And they are as good as the very best cafes.

Nespresso coffee can be months old and they only have 5-7 grams of coffee. A standard espresso double shot is 17 grams. I buy premium, freshly-roasted beans for about $15, which is 20 double shots of espresso… or 75 cents a shot. The other thing is that my real espresso maker steams the milk; with the Nespresso, it "froths" the milk, which is nice but not as good.

So is it a Slickdeal to pay $100 for a coffee maker that makes weak espresso at $2.50 or more per drink, when you can spend about $600 and get cafe quality for 75 cents per drink?

This uses the virtuo Nespresso capsules, so you can brew single shot or double shot espresso, as well as 5oz, 8oz, or 12oz coffees. You're likely thinking of the old style Nespresso pods. No doubt your setup makes a good cup of coffee, but yeah I think this price point is for people looking for pure convenience and are willing to pay the $1.25 per cup for that convenience.

This makes a dangerous gift for someone because it's the gift that keeps on taking if the person doesn't know how expensive the pods are 😂

Doesn't matter... there's truly no comparison.
My daughter wanted a coffee maker (not espresso), so I bought her a Chemex, 100 filters, and an electric kettle which heats water to the correct just-under-boiling temperature for coffee. It makes absolutely delicious coffee for far less money than a Nespresso.

These machines look cute and convenient, but their coffee just isn't very good at all. My friends come over for my cappuccino and they love it. Honestly, with a little effort, you can make the best espresso drinks in town. It's only beans, water and milk, after all.

We joined the Nespresso cult. It is a great way to have a variety of coffees available at any time without them going stale. We have probably 10 different coffee types at any given time. The machine in this post will let you do larger (American sized) variations including a small carafe. The Lungos are a decent size on the original line. You can adjust the size of an expresso or lungo or ... on some of the machines.

$20 off If you spend over $100 on anything at Target. The vertuo plus is also on sale and the $20 off works on this. The pop is under $100 so it don't work for it

Holy Carp the Vertuo pods ARE that expensive! I had no idea. I just paid less than $.27/aluminum pod on Amazon for Bestpresso Original sized pods and they are delicious. Not as good as Illy but then again, I'm using a $5 Goodwill Nespresso machine (which rocks, btw). I'm totally addicted to this new (to me) way of making delicious coffee!
