Just got an email from ASUS with a generic coupon for the Z1 Extreme model for $100 off making it $599 instead of $699.

I personally have a Steam Deck and am happy with it, but after researching and seeing a popular (+58 deal) from BestBuy for the same price, but requiring a Total Tech membership, I thought I'd share.

Link: Z1 Extreme [asus.com]

Coupon: NC100 during checkout.

FWIW, I tried it on the non-Extreme model and the coupon code did not apply.

Coupon code per email ends on Nov 8th, or "While supplies last."

edit: Although coupon stated through Nov 8th, it is still active on Nov 9th. YMMV on how much longer it's valid.
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

Yes it still has that issue.
What percent of owners do you think are shelling out $1k plus dollars for an eGPU for these hobbyist devices? Not many my guess.
Some day I'll be rich and have all the toys

Bang for you buck is Steam Deck, for performance to battery life. These other handhelds are faster but battery life shortens. FYI SteamOS is supports ROG Ally now, so that is a consideration.
Steam deck while a good machine is not the best bang for your buck since you pretty much cannot play any AAA game from the past 2 years at a FPS.

Steam deck is great if you like playing older games and emulate.

RDR2 was in 2019.
Cyberpunk 2077 was in 2020.
God of War is a rerelease of a ps4 game. I suppose technically it counts.

There by not proving my point. At least you tried. As person who used to visit the steamdeck reddit subreddit. There is always some guy that claims they enjoy a recent AAA game but never talk about the fact that it was sub 30 fps.

I noticed how you never even bother listing what settings you used.

But hey at least you tried.

I just picked up an open box excellent for $520 at best buy. Nowhere online did they list that it was missing everything! I had to return it.

I disagree, 30fps is fine for casual gaming, I actually intentionally limited games to max at 40 just for the battery life. Very short dips below 30 can be ok but I would agree if the average is less than 30 you're not going to like it. I did get the ally and it is a jump in performance but to say the SD is only good for old games is not true. I guess if you're requirement is ultra settings and 120fps, sure, all of these handhelds fail at any AAA game in the last 5-10 years.

Your opinion is that the SD can't do AAA... As for the numerous owners that don't hold your opinion, see this for a list of recent games that play fine on the SD....

Yeah I picked up an open box excellent for $480. Was in gross shape. My next try at an open box good was pristine. No idea how these idiots at BB grade them but it's inconsistent to say the least. Buy a few till you get a good one. Easy enough return!

The main point is that something more open like usb4 type C would add more value, options, and last longer to encourage to buy the product instead of crippling it with usb 3.2 and forcing us to use their proprietary port that'll be gone in a few years or less

And whoever thumb me down, you keep licking that Asus boot
I don't totally disagree,, adding more value would be great. But this early in handheld pC gaming that is exploding the mfgs don't really care. This market will get ironed in the next 2 years and wildly succeed or completely fail. I'm flipping a coin, no idea .

I bought a open box new legion go at bestbuy for $630 plus tax for the 1tb model instead. Bb had open box excellent ally for $450 at one point as well. I stayed away from the ally due to poor battery life and micro sd issues. That being said the go seems to be having software issues as well. Luckily bestbuy holiday return policy is until January 14
Battery life ain't gonna be much better on the legion go. Revisit the stats in the next couple months and I'll bet money on it.

While cool, ASUS doesn't exactly have the best support or customer service for their products, especially the consumer electronics like this. Even their laptop support sucks, though I think their laptops have a higher product priority, so I'm not surprised they are dropping prices on this.

I'd expect Lenovo to have better support of their Legion Go on the fact that they actually have a decent support team.
Lenovo isn't great. But my guess as yours, likely much bigger support than ASUS.

Not really unless you are buying the 64 gb refurb steam deck and upgrading the SSD. Go look at the SD 512 gb price, not remotely competitive to the Ally or Legion Go. And yes, the Steam interface looks great on the ally, basically a better steam Deck with full option windows.

I continue to be happy with the Ally. Playing Talos Principle 2 now which is an UE5 game and getting above 60 FPS with FSR. I use a custom 18 Watt profile with a fan curve and it doesn't get very hot and my SD card still works fine for media and emulation months later.

I feel it is well worth the money for the performance and convenience of every Windows game just working. Steam Deck is great as well. Just glad we have good competition and prices for handheld PCs and we can thank Valve for that one.

I wanted to love this machine but after three returns I washed my hands with it. I'm not paying $700 to not be able to use a SD card.
