email from Intuit from October 2023:

Hi there,

We're reaching out to our TurboTax Desktop customers to share an important change to how you'll install and activate your software this upcoming 2023 tax season.

To install and activate TurboTax 2023 on your computer, you'll be prompted to sign in to your existing Intuit Account (or create an account if you don't already have one) before entering your license code. The software won't install unless you sign in to your Intuit Account online. Importantly, your product license code can only be associated with one Intuit Account.

Your license code will then be stored in your Intuit Account, should you need to install the software again.

If you forgot your user ID or password, or need additional assistance logging in to your Intuit Account, this article will provide you with helpful steps.

For more information on product installation and activation, go to TurboTaxHelp.com.

Thanks for being part of the TurboTax family.

Warm regards,

The TurboTax Team

Going back thru my Amazon order history, the vast majority of my TurboTax purchases (as per a SD) have been in the last few days of December.

Home and business has been $80ish pre-discounts in previous years.

Also worth pointing out that Fidelity customers with various amounts in their retirement and brokerage accounts have gotten offers for free TurboTax premier and $10-15 upgrade to Home and Business in previous years. Also, chase and other credit cards usually have $5-15 back which stacks with purchasing these upgrades usually.

So you should be able to get a much better deal than this!

The Fidelity offer isn't live yet, still has 2022 on it. Hopefully it will go live at some point soon.

Not counting on Fidelity. I got free 2021 but not 2022.

Also it seems the Fidelity deal is offered only to brokerage account owners. I have multiple Fidelity retirement accounts through different employers, past and present, and they don't seem to care about those.

Wow, this is a significant change. Years past folks have pooled together and shared the 5 activations per code. Illicit? Maybe. I can see why Intuit is now implenting this safeguard.

Lets say you have a pc that's used strictly for finance stuff. Said pc is entirely offline for security reasons. How do you activate?

Maybe just pool and share that one intuit account too? I don't think the intuit account has any tax return info if you use the desktop product...

I think that's the best way. Just need to make sure you can load last year's data from any source, not just the one associated with that activated one.

For those who have a costco membership, they have it at the same price with a $10 credit that can be applied to additional state downloads or e-file fees.

Premier had gone up from 65 last year to 82 this year. That's a huge jump, and Lowe's didn't have donuts this year
