Several weeks back I started researching 83 - 85" OLED TVs for a planned 2023 purchase. I've looked at countless reviews, including those for the top tier LG, Samsung, and Sony OLED models at rtings.com.

TLDR - I came away disappointed. For those looking for an 80+ inch 4k OLED tv with top of the line OLED tech - It doesnt exist for the 2023 models.

Here's a summary of current 4k OLED situation...

Both LG's and Samsung's OLED Panel manufacturing and TV manufacturing buisnesses are indenpendent from one other. (4 somewhat sepeate companies.)

OLED panels from LG and Samsung are found in many different brand OLED TVs. However, both brand's panel companies sometimes reserve the top tier tech at the largest panels sizes for their own brand's TV business.

LG's WOLED (2023) panels with MLA and META tech get top marks.

Samsungs (2023) QD-OLED panels get top marks.

LG's WOLED panels with MLA and META tech trades blows with Samsung's QD-OLED tech. There is no clear winner between these two in 2023... each solution has strengths and weaknesses vs the other.

All other things being equal, QD-OLED based TVs are considerd to be better than WOLED based TVs that do NOT have META and/or MLA tech.

LG's top of the line 4k series is the G3. LG G3's use WOLED panels with MLA and META tech except for the G3 83" model. One level down is C3 series, however no C3's have MLA tech so brightness and color volume suffer. LG is said to restrict 77" panels with MLA and META tech to LG branded TVs this year.

Samsung's top of the line 4k series is the S95C. One level down is the S90C series. Both the S95C and S90C series use QD-OLED panels, but the S95C series TVs are significantly more expense than the S90C series. Most reviewers consider the S90C series 55, 65, & 77 inch models some of the best bang for the buck (upper tier) OLEDs you can buy. There is no 80+ inch S95C. Also, the S90C series 83 inch model uses LG's WOLED panel WITHOUT MLA tech.

No 80+ inch 4k OLED panel exists with MLA or QD-OLED tech...

If you are insistant on purchasing an 83" OLED based TV this year, you are probalby better off buying the LG C3 on sale over the LG G3 and Samsung S90c. They all use the same panel, the C3 should be close to the S90C's price, and the C3 will come with DV support and better picture processing.

If you are looking for an 83" (4k) OLED with same technology that get's rave reviews in the top tier 55, 65, and 77" models - You need to wait until next year.

For smaller size OLED's:

Samsung still won't pay the trivial licensing cost per TV for Dobly Vision... The alternative is a pricier Sony model using a Samsung QD-OLED panel.

The LG 77" G3 is considered one of the best TVs you can buy due to LG's Dolby Vision support and MLA tech.

The Sony 77" A95L uses the top tier QD-OLED panel from Samsung. Sony's offering includes Dobly Vision support and has Sony's superior video processing and trades blows with the LG G3.

No 83" OLED for me this year.

Nope, Samsung doesn't pay for that unfortunately.

I managed to pickup the 77" OLED S90 for $1799 through the EPP pricing. Was able to get the additional discount by contacting chat for 10% off. Which brought the price to $1799. I couldn't pass up the deal!
Would you mind telling us where you bought this TV? Your screenshot does not look like it came from the Samsung website. Also, can you walk us through the steps you went through to secure the extra 10%. would be much appreciated.

For anyone who wanted a code, I spoke to Samsung chat and they gave me "LGMU5UOVTB". It takes 10% off your cart but it does not stack with other epp programs. If it doesn't work anymore, I apologize. It expired or was 1 time use.

S90C 77" at $1999.99

83 vs 77 is 16% more screen at a 40% premium. Must consider WOLED vs QD-OLED as well.

Not comparing 77" here

Comparing s90c woled 83" vs Sony mini LED 85" x95k

Since not many reviews for the 83 inch is out I'm having difficulty deciding

However unnecessary, I just thought to provide another data point if budget was any concern.

IMO, there is no reason to pay more for 83" vs 77" unless you are a size king lol

Between those two, I would lean towards the Sony for processing power and Dolby Vision (plus the extra 2"). The S90C 83" will be reviewed comparably to the LG C3 since LG makes the panels for them. Most likely why it's difficult to find reviews for the S90C 83"

Why is Samsung discounting this TV so heavily? The next cheapest 83 is the C3 and that a thousand dollars more.

All good but also, the 83 C3 is still selling for almost 4K so, if you get the 83 S90c you are a full thousand less than even the 83 C3. Its starting to get compelling.

Will be interesting to see how much further Samsung will drop the price on this. They usually heavily discount the TV's in January when the new lineup is announced. This could be sub $2500 or even close to $2k. Hopefully, some reviews show up until then.

Over the weekend flash sale. 2575 ish (was here on slick deals as well)

Also @JollyGiraffe405 I sit about 13-14 feet away. 77 inches is stretching that viewing distance doable but bigger is better in that case

I would have gotten the x95k for that price. That deal wasn't available near me.

Precisely. LG is debatably better, and a matter of opinion. Marginal either way. No right or wrong. However, the $ difference for Sony or LG OLED is drastic. It cannot be ignored, and far from marginally more
