Several weeks back I started researching 83 - 85" OLED TVs for a planned 2023 purchase. I've looked at countless reviews, including those for the top tier LG, Samsung, and Sony OLED models at rtings.com.

TLDR - I came away disappointed. For those looking for an 80+ inch 4k OLED tv with top of the line OLED tech - It doesnt exist for the 2023 models.

Here's a summary of current 4k OLED situation...

Both LG's and Samsung's OLED Panel manufacturing and TV manufacturing buisnesses are indenpendent from one other. (4 somewhat sepeate companies.)

OLED panels from LG and Samsung are found in many different brand OLED TVs. However, both brand's panel companies sometimes reserve the top tier tech at the largest panels sizes for their own brand's TV business.

LG's WOLED (2023) panels with MLA and META tech get top marks.

Samsungs (2023) QD-OLED panels get top marks.

LG's WOLED panels with MLA and META tech trades blows with Samsung's QD-OLED tech. There is no clear winner between these two in 2023... each solution has strengths and weaknesses vs the other.

All other things being equal, QD-OLED based TVs are considerd to be better than WOLED based TVs that do NOT have META and/or MLA tech.

LG's top of the line 4k series is the G3. LG G3's use WOLED panels with MLA and META tech except for the G3 83" model. One level down is C3 series, however no C3's have MLA tech so brightness and color volume suffer. LG is said to restrict 77" panels with MLA and META tech to LG branded TVs this year.

Samsung's top of the line 4k series is the S95C. One level down is the S90C series. Both the S95C and S90C series use QD-OLED panels, but the S95C series TVs are significantly more expense than the S90C series. Most reviewers consider the S90C series 55, 65, & 77 inch models some of the best bang for the buck (upper tier) OLEDs you can buy. There is no 80+ inch S95C. Also, the S90C series 83 inch model uses LG's WOLED panel WITHOUT MLA tech.

No 80+ inch 4k OLED panel exists with MLA or QD-OLED tech...

If you are insistant on purchasing an 83" OLED based TV this year, you are probalby better off buying the LG C3 on sale over the LG G3 and Samsung S90c. They all use the same panel, the C3 should be close to the S90C's price, and the C3 will come with DV support and better picture processing.

If you are looking for an 83" (4k) OLED with same technology that get's rave reviews in the top tier 55, 65, and 77" models - You need to wait until next year.

For smaller size OLED's:

Samsung still won't pay the trivial licensing cost per TV for Dobly Vision... The alternative is a pricier Sony model using a Samsung QD-OLED panel.

The LG 77" G3 is considered one of the best TVs you can buy due to LG's Dolby Vision support and MLA tech.

The Sony 77" A95L uses the top tier QD-OLED panel from Samsung. Sony's offering includes Dobly Vision support and has Sony's superior video processing and trades blows with the LG G3.

No 83" OLED for me this year.

Nope, Samsung doesn't pay for that unfortunately.

If you end up getting it and don't have use for it, I'd really appreciate it if you could shoot me a PM with the code. Trying to convince the wife that we need to upgrade and $200 off would get my cause 😁

The lack of Dolby Vision is a deal-breaker for me & disqualifies Samsung from consideration. When a $300 TCL 58" 4K supports it, there is literally less than zero excuse for Samsung to be such cheap bastages.
Thanks for letting us know.

I know they are completely different type of TVs and the 83 inch version is WOLED, but could someone advise between a 83" s90c and a 85" qn90c and maybe a Sony x95k? They are about the same price
Did tons of research. Many hours of youtube videos and reviews. I ended up grabbing the x95k, OLED does not always mean the best picture. Processing is pretty important when it comes to sports and content that is not perfectly streamed. Plus the extra 2 inches fits perfectly in my already built box. Yes. Thats what she said.

Where are you getting the 85" x95k from? I don't see it for a cheap price anywhere
It was down to $2475 a few weeks ago, and recently had another dip to $2575. Not sure if they are still have enough to discount them to that level again, set an alert and keep checking AMZ.

Their Soundbars support Dolby Atmos. I'd be surprised if their Soundbars support Dolby Vision passthrough while their TVs don't.
Dolbyvision is like HDR, not audio

Using the Shop app and swiping down (refreshing) the cart, "lucky day" price is now $2645. Using EDU.

I wonder if tomorrow it will go down to $2400?

No I understand the difference. That response was to another post where they mentioned the Soundbar supported Dolby Vision instead of Dolby Atmos. If you want/need Dolby Vision, you'll have to look elsewhere.

Dolby vision and Hdr10 has no tangible differences per HDTV tests on YouTube
You are the first person to actually highlight this. Hdr10 and DV (Dolby Vision) have negligible differences in quality. Quite a lot of people are making the decision to not purchase Samsung TVs because of the lack of DV. In terms of actual quality, the LG TV lineup this year is pretty far behind Samsung and Sony. Currently, DV should not be the deciding factor when you are dropping $2000-$5000 on a tv.

Not having Dolby Vision is a pretty big deal now that it's quickly becoming the standard for movies and shows. All of Disney+ 4K content uses DV. Same with HBO Max, AppleTV+, and some Netflix content.

It's a big deal once you've seen how DV works compared to HDR10/HDR10+ and HLG.
OLED TVs hit some pretty high brightness/contrast. The data from DV allows the content to make full use of your TVs peak nit count.

Of course, if you are not someone who cares that much. This set will do fine.
But LG & Sony are doing some impressive things with their DV sets.
Supposedly it doesn't matter as much as people say. It just sues hdr10 or w/e instead and people have said in reviews there's not a lot of difference. But it's still stupid on samsung's part.

Coincidentally, for first time in past few weeks, watched 3 series on Prime in HDR10+. Rarely seen that designation used. Hopefully a sign to come. I'm all for standard open source tech, enough proprietary stuff which are money grabs. I've been fortunate to own many good TV, and do side by side comparisons.

Never once did Dolby vision make any difference in my preference. The only thing that matters is the quality of the TV. Period.

Prefer LG, or Sony? That's fine. I love Sony. How much more is Sony worth? That's very personal, but definitely not 50% more IMO

How much is Dolby vision worth more? All else equal, not even $1. Nope. However, it's never equal, but Dolby vision would never be my deciding factor.
50% is nothing compared to the 55 inch ones... At that size the sony is literally OVER TWICE the price. $2799 vs the $1299 s90c price.
