I will never understand the need to be upset about the choices that other people make. It's like people getting mad that someone uses iPhone (or Android). It does not affect your life, just let it go.

If neither of you are bothered, I suggest simply thinking "Ah, this deal is not for me, as I don't want to rent an EV" and then moving on. I would never, for instance, click on a LuLuLemon deal and say "I would never wear that." It's fine that it's not for me, and I hope other people enjoy the deal.

As for this deal, you're essentially getting 50% off for renting two days. 50% off seemed like a good enough deal to me to consider getting one on my next rental.

It can be more convenient if the place you're staying at has a place to charge. No need to stop by a gas station and waste 5-10 minutes. A typical 120v outlet is usually good enough. EVs are great if you're staying within a region.

If your planning a long road trip with more than 500 miles a day, then I prefer a gas car.

About a month ago I received a SPAM email from Hertz asking me to rent an EV the next time I rent, and it said as a rewards member, drop off with any charge for only a $25 recharge fee.

But this email was oddly worded, so I would double check carefully before renting.

I've rented a Tesla twice from Hertz this year. The first time was a little problematic because they didn't have the Model Y I reserved and instead I got a Model 3 SR with 10% on the battery. Irritating, but not fatal. The second time, I got a Model 3 Long Range. Fantastic. It charges super quick. I was driving alone and appreciated the relatively frequent charging stops to rest, but it charges so fast that I couldn't take a nap :-) Both times, I was only required to return the car with the same charge level as it had when I picked it up.

Between the first and second time (August and October), Hertz enabled the ability to use the Tesla app, so being able to use your phone as a key and to monitor the car was so so so much nicer.

Charging? So easy. The car tells you where to go, you show up, and you plug in. That's it. No apps, no credit cards. The chargers are at a mix of gas stations, hotels, and grocery stores, so there's no consistency in that regard, but there's at least a place to use the bathroom.

I wouldn't recommend an EV rental for all routes, but with a Tesla, pretty much all interstates and major highways are in play. My route was along I-10 in Texas and across Texas into New Mexico and Colorado. About 3500 miles total, and the only real problem I had was a bit of range anxiety with the Model 3 SR over a long-ish stretch of highway on a really hot day.

As with everything these days, EV vs. ICE has become absurdly politicized. Don't listen to the noise. Rent a Tesla for a few days and try it out. You might find you'll like it. I would start out with the Teslas since they're generally easier to charge. If you're brave, try the Polestar 2 or the Chevy Bolt. They're nice cars, but they have some charging limitations (the Bolt's relatively slow charging, and the non-Tesla charging network).

Higher end rental companies (Avis or Hertz - as opposed to Dollar or Thrifty) make most of their money off business travelers. Teslas work just fine for someone who flies in for a day of meetings.

As for leisure rentals, people who own EVs prefer to rent EVs (you have no idea how annoying driving a gas car is until you've lived without it for a while). As the EV ownership grows, Hertz's decision will make more and more sense. They may have gone too hard, too fast, but overall it's the right direction.
Even most EV owners do not want to rent an EV, most people who own an EV have a charger in their house, when you rent one away from home now you have to find a charger (and no, the rental car companies do not give you free charging so you have to pay the higher price for a public charger). And also, I know plenty of EV owners who also own a gas powered car.

Hertz's decision did not make sense, if it did, they wouldn't have to offer discounts on the car that cost them the most and they should be able to charge the most. I don't know if you have ever run a business, but in the business world you don't make money by charging the least for the thing that cost you the most.

The choices you make have a direct impact on other people. For example Hertz made a bad bet on EVs, so they now jack up the prices on basic economy rentals to make EV rentals look cheaper. It costs double to rent a basic car because Hertz stupidly invested in EVs. Who the hell wants to charge their car on a trip to a new city? To use your example, people that purchase iPhones encouraged other companies to get rid of removable batteries. I don't understand how people don't get this concept. Your choices negatively impact other people. You don't live in a vacuum. Your bad choices become my bad options.

Some people workout to have a great body..

Some people wear really nice clothes..

Some people drive electric cars..

Do whatever makes you happy... but none of these are going to save the planet.

Would avoid hertz if possible. They overcharged my rental by 1k. Customer service is absolutely horrid. People on the other end are from another country and dont understand your situation at all.

Renting with Hertz this weekend. Code definitely doesn't work if you have any other discounts applied (eg: corporate discount code). Ended up being about the same as my existing reservation after fees.

Who want's to worry about charging when renting? You have to be pretty committed.
It can be a hassle, or it might not be a big deal, depending on where you are renting and your purpose. It can also be an opportunity to try living with an EV for those who have interest.

I stayed in an AirBnB where the nearest charger was ~30 minutes away. That sucked because I had to ditch the family to get the car charged.

On the way back to the airport, a Supercharger was on the way. That was convenient. I kinda consider myself fortunate in that the car was exactly 80% when I arrived at the airport. Anything nearby were those slow chargers really intended for hotel guests.

For sure you should try to understand what charging options are available in the area before signing up for an EV. Also...photograph everything in your car when you get it. Mine didn't have an adapter for the slow networks and they wanted to charge me for it until I showed a video of the car not having one at pickup.

One of my friend in particular has had several Teslas. She knows the game and loves planning all that charging hassle for some reason. It would be no big deal for her to manage all the EV quirks.

I'd only consider a rental EV in limited circumstances after my 1 experience. Basically I'd have to be in a city with charging options near my overnight location and/or I just need a cheap rental and there's a deal like this available. I would not get an EV for roadtrips because I like to explore and you just can't depend on a charger being close when you need it.

I this is a good way to take an extended test drive if you're considering buying an EV. You can live with one for a weekend, take a road trip, maybe even learn about the charging infrastructure near you and see if it can work for your lifestyle. TU!

It can be a real pain to charge if you end up with something other than a Tesla. I had a Volvo in Houston (not sure if I rented from Hertz), loved the car, but charging it quickly was a major pain. Most of the fast chargers were broken and the slow ones are INCREDIBLY slow. If you can charge where you are staying, it wouldn't be so bad, but otherwise it was a miserable experience trying to get the car charged.

Be careful of Hertz. They have been randomly filing false Grand Theft Auto reports with the police and having their customers arrested years after renting vehicles and properly returning them.
