Escort's latest MAX 360 MKII radar detector is currently on sale at most retailers for $50 off, but buying direct from Escort's web site, brings it down to $449.95 w/"VIP50" discount code (another $50 off) and free shipping. About as cheap as it gets for an excellent radar detector!
IMO I have found that Waze is the most useful in detecting speed traps. It's free. It's not always 100% accurate and there are false positives as it relies on feedback from the users, but for me, it beats spending hundreds of bucks for something that also isn't 100% accurate.
Waze will not save you. It helps. My Radar detector has saved me countless times and Waze, now and then. Waze assumes cops are parked and stationary.
I loved detectors back in the day but now everything is instant-on lidar. That detector will let you know you're about to get a ticket and that's it.
This assumes you're the only one on the road within a mile radius. Where I live, we have traffic, I can't remember the time I was the lone wolf on the roadway.
Yes, some of us don't drive a Prius. Saved me this week while driving my ZO6 from an officer shooting radar around a curve, my V1 detector was going on and off before I got to the curve (no warning on Waze yet), so I slowed down to the ridiculous 30mph speed limit (the road used to be 45mph less than a year ago, they lowered it as the city needs more revenue). Well worth the money and I highly recommend a detector with Waze and/or an ALP.

This is honestly wrong. Most cops, even if they gun you over speed, they try a few times to confirm. If your detector goes off and the cops got you at 90mph, but the next 3 tries show you slowing down, they usually don't bother running you down. The key is to hit the brakes as soon as you can, and detectors can see further than your eyes.
I've run this MKii and the R8 side by side for last 11 months. Pretty much spot on with each other in terms of performance and range.
The biggest plus for the R8 is the directional Indictator is in the same place on lcd and not a little arrow on the outside of the screen that I have to "look around" to figure out the direction. Night time not so bad but daylight it is not as easy/quick to determine the direction. Wish option available to have direction on screen as well as having "dark mode" but keep directional arrows lit up.
Also fwiw the Escort M1 or M2 cameras will work with either RD and mount just fine to the Uniden bracket.
Thanks for the real world feedback. Everything I see online says the Unidens are considerably better.
I have an R7 in one of my cars and need a new detector for a different one (curently has the passport Max 2 and I want directional indicator). I'm trying to decide if I should move the R7 and upgrade that car to the R8 or just keep the R7 where it is and put this in the other car. It sounds like the extra cost of the R8 may not be worth it, especially with this sale.
Not in my opinion. There are known speedtraps throughout the nation. Small towns will purposely drop a rural 65mph highway down to 35 just to generate revenue. It's predation of the citizenry, but of course they let their friends and police buddies go. I would pay $5000 not to give $500 to the backwoods shitkicking cops in those little towns. I still try to drive the speed limit mostly.
How else would a Maganificent town make any revenue.
Why indeed? And it was specifically $449.95. Would rather be proactive. And helps me drive slower when it matters! (Construction sites, accidents, etc.) - There are always cops around those w/radar on. And you get what you pay for, especially w/lawyers!…
Hope some of you got the deal before it disappeared. I get mine tomorrow!

That's because you're not using the right unit or not smart enough to set it up properly. I have ZERO false alerts…

My brother found a Prius in his Z06's air filter once… :-)
Fact. Some folks have no clue, but think they do.
