Buyer beware, these drives are supplied by NewEgg and they have fallen off a cliff for items they provide. And even more so for marketplace items. Drives (WD20tb red) from Newegg have been recertified when buying new. Drives from market place have been counterfeit (870ssd).

NewEgg has been going downhill since they started that marketplace garbage and began screwing people on their return policies. NewEgg selling via Walmart's marketplace seems rather desperate to me. Believe me, I loved shopping NewEgg 15 or 20 years ago, but I wouldn't bother with them now.

I really feel like we need to see ~$10/TB. Mechanical drives haven't really been dropping in price.

You can get used enterprise class HDD's for about $10/TB. Those deals pop up on SD often enough. Though people usually get more excited about larger drives like this 20TB. I got this one [amazon.com] from GoHardDrive for $80. It had 39 months of usage on it. Runs cool and quiet, too.
Are those SAS or SATA drives? I see that they offer an adapter cable and I am looking for something that will just plug into my QNAP TS-653A. Granted, it may have an 8TB restriction and I need to do some research since my NAS is getting older and I have not exceed the 8TB limit.

Thanks!

How do I tell if the Newegg drive is not actually new? The serial number or some kind of software test?

Keep in mind for those buying for NAS/docks or non-PCs. 64 bit operating system is required to address drives 18tb and larger.

Older docks and NAS (using 32 bit cpus) can only address up to 16TB per drive due to limitation in architecture. In those situations, the drives may not even show up or initialize. You may think it is dead.

It is 5 years from drive manufacturing date however and if you read reviews on new egg, people have been saying they are getting year old stock with really bad packaging by newegg. So warranty is 4 years and drive quality is questionable.
That's not true. Warranty is from date of shipment to customer. To quote the actual product manual:
"2.14 - Product warranty
Beginning on the date of shipment to the customer and continuing for the period specified in the purchase contract, Seagate warrants that each product (including components and subassemblies) that fails to function properly under normal use due to defect in materials or workmanship or due to nonconformance to the applicable specifications will be repaired or replaced, at Seagate's option and at no charge to the customer, if returned by customer at customer's expense to Seagate's designated facility in accordance with Seagate's warranty procedure. Seagate will pay for transporting the repair or replacement item to the customer. For more detailed warranty information, refer to the standard terms and conditions of purchase for Seagate products on the purchase documentation.

The remaining warranty for a particular drive can be determined by calling Seagate Customer Service at 1-800-468-3472. Users can also determine remaining warranty using the Seagate web site (www.seagate.com). The drive serial number is required to determine remaining warranty information."
If you use the tool on the website, it gives you a warranty date based on the manufacture date because they have no idea how long a drive might sit in a warehouse. My new drives were built on 02/25/23, and they reported an warranty end date of 06/25/28. So it looks like they give you 4 months as a default for warehouse time. So, good tool to check that it's not a counterfeit drive and an approximation of for the actual warranty. They also specify:
"Please Note: This status is provided for your convenience. There may be other factors that affect your warranty status such as country of purchase, etc. To see full warranty information please refer to Warranty Replacement Claims."
So, if you have your receipt, it's 5 years from ship date. Without it, it's 5 years from manufacture date, plus a few months. Actually ran into this several years ago with a drive that died and had a 3 year warranty. It's manufacture date was just over 3 years, but I had the paperwork to show I purchased it less than 3 ago and they honored the warranty.

So, don't believe everything you hear/read. Even the generic warranty statement on the Seagate site says check the manual for the exact terms of your warranty.

Note: Edited to correct typo. Warranty end date reported is 06/25/28, not 06/25/23.

was it poorly packaged? Seems like Newegg has been a crap show as of late. The reviews on walmart does not give one much confidence.

Costco has the Seagate 14TB portable drives for $150. Still had some in store last night but I think they are sold out online. You can get one and shuck it to get near the $10/TB number.

I use this plugin which does pre-read, zeroing, and then verify. I finished pre-read and it's 75% through zeroing

I bought one and it was a Newegg box with padding inside a moderately larger box with more padding. No damage to either box.

Anyone has experience about using Seagate Exos 7200RPM SATA III 3.5" Internal Hard Drives in general comparing to WD ones these days? I'm on the fence.
Thanks.

You can see the stats live. https://www.backblaze.com/blog/ba...r-q3-2023/

The lowest AFR drives are HGST (now WD HC) and Toshiba. The Seagates have become better in the last few years (except for some problematic models) but personally I purchase manufacturer renewed HGST/WD HC Helium drives they are super-reliable. I believe the WD Pro is another SKU for them (not the plus).

An example (w/ 5 year warranty to boot): https://www.goharddrive.com/WD-Ul...496-cr.htm

I would wait a bit though, everyone emptying their wallets right now recert are either sold out or higher price, so now buy new. Wait a few months and buy recert.
