My question is why the ER and not just being admitted by your doctor?

Because they can do more for you in the ER. The EKG showed that I could've had another heart attack and as much as I don't want to go in I have to. I should've gone in right away but I'm an idiot. I've been through this a lot but it's not an excuse for not going in.

As I've only been in the ER a few times in my life I certainly am no expert, but my experience has always been to get diagnosed and if possible stabilized in the ER so they can send one home with instructions to follow up with your own doctor or a specialist. If additional or more treatment is needed after seeing your doctor, then admission to the hospital would be ordered (I never had this happen but my mom did).

At this point, it would seem to me the ER would tell you that what you are experiencing is no longer an 'emergency' but then again what do I know. You've already had the EKG done so is the ER going to do another one?

Now if they do end up admitting you, I don't see how that would be any different than your doctor admitting you without going through the ER. Just seems logical to me, but then again, like I said, what do I know?

I wonder if it's an insurance thing...like a DX or admission from the ER is different than from the Dr so it's coded and "cost" a different amount.

Could be. Or maybe a regional thing? What I do know is that my recent trip to the ER for covid which lasted all of about two hours cost well over $3,500 total and cost me over $1,500 out of pocket. I'd avoid that if at all possible and I would think my insurance would prefer one avoiding the ER also which is why so much of the cost is passed along to the patient. A hospital admission would have cost me less but I needed to go to the ER in the later evening when there was no place else available to be seen. Otherwise anything else would have been the preferable choice for both myself and my insurance.

I've been wondering what happened.

I went in with low blood pressure and left with high blood pressure. They treated me for severe hypokalemia. My troponin level was elevated. They gave me a Lasix IV that made me pee every 5 minutes. They gave me a potassium IV that was level 10 pain. They gave me morphine which did absolutely nothing. I had a stress test and echocardiogram. In the end, I left in worse shape then when I came in.

Glad to see you back. Sorry for all the problems and ending up in worse shape than before but you sort of predicted this would be the case. Again, sorry.

I had a rocky night. I almost passed out multiple times. The problem with my doctors is that they only care about the stress test. Once I pass it, they want to send me home. They never addressed what I came in for which was chest pain and shortness of breath with any exercise. They ran some urology tests and put me on an IV antibiotic but said that I didn't have an infection. My urologist never came to see me. Neither did the cardiologist. This is the 2nd hospital trip in a row that the cardiologist has skipped out on me. The time before that he saw me for 2 minutes. If I'm not dead, he doesn't care. I don't know what else there is to do since my cardiologist is considered the best in my area and the urologist already blew up my prostate with the new water surgery. I guess that the next step with the urologist is a permanent catheter. He's already told me that my bladder is done. The Lasix IV they gave me made my urinary problems10 times worse. I had to pee every 5 minutes for 4 hours. And it wasn't just a little bit of pee, it was a river. Like the Nile River in Egypt. I'm never going to have a Lasix IV again no matter what the doctor says. As bad as the Lasix IV was, the Potassium IV was much worse. My potassium dropped down to 2.5 which is at the critical level. They went nuts in the ER giving me these huge potassium pills and then running IV's. The hang another IV with the potassium IV and they ran the potassium one at a high level. It was 10 level pain. It ran for 2 minutes before they stopped it and readjusted the level. I couldn't have taken another minute of it. It felt like my arm was going to explode. They could use a potassium IV for torture. You'd have to talk no matter how tough you are. The biggest bummer of my hospital visit is my blood pressure. I came in at 96/53 which is a little low for me and I left at 152/100. It wasn't a fluke because it was that high for the last 24 hours. The doctor didn't seem too concerned about it because I'm not dead. His answer is for me to take an anti-depressant and gain 100 pounds and become an addict. Gee, thanks for that. I'm going to call my primary doctor today and see if I can get in to see him. I want to switch all of my current doctors (except for the primary) and also switch hospitals. Where is Dr House when you need him? My cardiologist tells me that my stent will blow at some point and I'll have a massive heart attack and die instantly. If I go into the hospital and I'm still breathing he doesn't care because it's not the big one. He thinks that I'm a baby for coming in and all of the issues I'm having are in my mind. I wish there was a way for him to spend a day inside my body. Maybe he'd take things a little more seriously if he could live what I'm living. He's never had a heart attack and he's never passed out from not being able to breathe. He has no idea what I'm going through. Just because you see it every day doesn't mean that you know what the patient is feeling.
