I check the dates at CVS for every food item I buy. Their nuts are usually good, as long as they are within date. Their price on the bottles of lemon and lime juice aren't that much more here than at the grocery store. Definitely don't try to buy Hellmans there, you will for sure have a heart attack!
I worked in Central Supply at a hospital while I was going through college so checking outdates is second nature. I can't imagine putting anything in my shopping cart without knowing when it's going to expire.

I wish my husband was like you. He's never really checked dates (never shopped for food much in the past) and says he's too old now (mid 70's) to remember to do so. Ugh! I hate when he brings something home almost near the sell by date.

I always checked the dates on food items at CVS. When I lived in PA, CVS sold so many out of date products that the state's attorney general got involved and CVS agreed to give customers a $3.50 ECB for every out of date product turned in to a cashier. I loved finding multiples of a product that was past date. Too bad CVS never seemed to get more than two or three of each product or I could have made more than I did.

That being said, I've still found food products from CVS with a stale taste or bad smell even though the date has not passed. Makes me wonder about the conditions of the places where CVS warehouses their products. The most recent thing we found bad was a canister of pringles - the smell when opening made me want to retch. It was awful.
You got ripped off lol. It was $4 here in Cali but I never would accept it. That's back when the deals were really good and there was no need. I didn't want somebody to buy a 2-year old bag of chips. I completely agree with you about stale items at CVS. I read an article the other day about rats in the Family Dollar warehouse. I've never had a problem with Pringles (and I love them) but I have had a problem with regular chips. They're coming from local vendors so it's not because of the CVS warehouse. I've had a major problem with soda pop being flat at the drugstores. It's not limited to CVS. I've had the same problem at RA. I've never had a soda issue at Wags. On the popcorn I got the other day, I don't think that there was anything wrong with it. It's not something that I usually eat and with my medical condition and all of the meds I take it's easy for me to get sick. I just wish that I hadn't done the deal because I wasted my $3 overage and it looks like the only drugstore deal that I'm going to do this week. If I had read Eugene's post earlier, I would've got Poise. It's not what I'd call a good deal but Poise is very popular and I'm sure that I could've given them to somebody.

It's something you never forget. I also learned sterile technique which helped me a lot during covid. There are a lot of mistakes you can make if you don't know any better.

I went to Aldi's today. I wanted to try the raspberry danish they have on sale for $3.19. Vons has their raspberry danish on sale for $5 tomorrow. The regular price is $6.99. The Aldi's danish was ok but it had a strong butter taste. The Vons danish is much better but I'm going on memory. I haven't had it in 3 years (since the price went up so much). The question is if the Aldi's danish is worth buying for $3.19. I'm going to say no. It's not horrible but it's not worth all of the calories. If I'm going to eat something that's really bad for me, it's going to have to taste like a pastry chef made it. I walked 6 miles on my Aldi's trip so I don't feel that guilty about having some danish.

We have also opened two canisters of pringles that were bought from CVS and were within date, but smelled and tasted terrible. Interesting, as that's really the only bad food I've gotten from there.

I was going to throw them away without even tasting the chips but against my better judgment I took a bite. As expected, it tasted bad. Told hubby and son to not even try them but instead open another canister. For the rest of that day and the next I kept thinking I was going to get sick. Thankfully, I never did. Hopefully you didn't either.

I always took the $3.50 and probably made $100's over the course of several years. Having to pay for them is the only way a store will change their bad practices. In our area, it seemed once a store had to pay out too many of these ECBs, they did try to improve by keeping track of who put product out on which shelves and reprimanding the people who did it constantly. Apparently, workers were told to always check dates before stocking so it was on them to do so. I'm one of those people who always did a job to the best of my ability and gave an employer my best; guess I expect the same from others or they should let someone else have the job. Just my two cents.

I had that happen with some cookies. It's usually that the food doesn't taste as fresh as when I get it from the grocery store.

I always wished CVS had to do that here, I could make bank for sure!

CVS is still required to do it in one state, it may be PA. The employees on Reddit complain about it all the time, but my thought is, just do your job in the first place and you wouldn't have to pay out those $$.

I read the Reddit posts sometimes. It seems like the most unhappy people in the world work at CVS.
