It's a solid player. It's usually the one people recommend before jumping to the Panasonic that you mentioned (820). The cons of the Sony are that it can freeze mid movie and you have to manually turn on Dolby Vision when a disc has it. Sometimes it's hard to know which discs do and don't. The Panasonic also does up converting and color rendering better than the Sony (significantly in some people's eyes).

When comparing the Sony to almost any other player, it's as good or better than them. I'm going to pick another one up for our bedroom at this price.

I own both this player and the Panasonic 820. The entry level Panasonic is probably the only other one worth considering against this Sony.

I'm just recently catching up to 4k so…

How does this one compare to the Panasonic one on FP that's almost 3x this price MSRP?

This sounds like a really good player, albeit an old model. Man, I wish I knew more about these things as well to know if I should bite.

As much as I am a fan of Panasonic players I'm not sure I would say it's significantly better.

The biggest drawback with Sony was the known issues but some have posted settings you can change that resolves them apparently.
The manual switching on/off for DV is a nuisance but for some find they can live with it for the price difference.

TBH the Optimizer does so well the 420 may be good enough for the price difference also.

I really like my Sony player. I don't use it much, but it really upscales DVD and blu-ray discs well, too (on my Vizio 65" that doesn't upscale well itself). Well worth the upgrade over an old blu-ray player to get more use out non-4k discs.

I recently have been wanting to buy this player. I ended up buying it used. It has been $159.99 at Walmart (maybe an online only price?).
Sony UBP-X700 4K Ultra HD Home Theater Streaming Blu-ray DVD Player with Wi-Fi, 4K upscaling, HDR10, Hi Res Audio, Dolby Digital TrueHD /DTS, and Dolby Vision https://www.walmart.com/ip/609137213

I decided on this player as it supports the Vudu app unlike the LG I was also looking at. I have a 3d tv and a couple 3d titles on Vudu so I hope this does the trick! I also hope it does well at video playback over USB, but I have a few ways to get that done if it doesn't work out. My Vudu app on my PS3 does 3d, but only at 720p.

I've had this for a couple years now and been very happy with it. Never had the freezing issue and my TV up-converts well so never used the player for that. Having to switch for Dolby Vision is kind of a pain but not a deal breaker in my opinion. If I had more disposable income I'd probably go for the Panasonic 820 but this has worked fine for me so far.

I have this player that I purchased couple years ago to play the 4K Blu-Ray discs for the Dolby Atmos sound system and can say that I did not have any complaints. All discs play pretty well...I was not impressed with the DVD upscaling capabilities as how it plays on my 4K TV? it may be okay on a standard HD TV.

I saw a review with the same complaint about DVD upscaling. Does it not look better than regular 480p? I have a TV from the short overlap of 3d TV and 4k tv from 2016. I'm still waiting for my used UHD player to ship. It's also pretty cool that it can play super audio CDs. Only my launch PS3 can play those. Now I just need to find a SACD.

From what I can find on a quick Google, the difference between the UBP-X700M and UBP-X700 is the 700M is a region-free model, whereas the 700 is North America only. But specs and performance should be identical. Someone please correct me if that's inaccurate.
