At $300, sounds like a unicorn. Perhaps you could link to some of those deals?
My HP Pavillion that I bought a few years ago for around this price is at this moment handling over 100 browser tabs from multiple web browsers, around 15 documents open in Word, and around 15 files open in Photoshop, and stills runs youtube at 1080p without a single buffering issue. I don't know much about computers, but that seems like a pretty good laptop to me.

I don't play games on it btw!

Looking to get a laptop for my wife. Mostly will be used for internet browsing and writing papers. Looking for a backlit keyboard and probably 512gb storage…any thoughts of this is a good deal for the money and specs?

For wife, price may not be the objective, so go for it. The specs are pretty good and probably much more powerful than the usage described (Email/browsing/MS-office/Youtube etc). Just from price point of view, this price is on the higher side for the specs. I would look for i3-13th Gen or i5-12th Gen machine around $300 with touch screen, backlit keyboard, minimum 256 gb storage and minimum 8 gb ram (with an additional empty slot). If you can find one with 16GB / 512GB that is of course preferred.

I probably should have said that her limit is $600 before tax. I will take a look for the i5 you mentioned as I try to look for i5 and 8gb (with an open slot) as you mentioned. Thank you for your thoughts!

where did you see this?

The data sheet from the costco website says this:

Memory • 16 GB DDR4-3200 MHz RAM (2 x 8 GB)
Accessible memory
slots
• Memory slot not user accessible

These 13th gen chips are almost the same as their 12th gen counterparts, so if you see 12th gen for cheaper, scoop one of those up.

The HP is good and certainly worth buying, no doubt. Thanks to OP for finding it. I am looking for $300 (give or take $50) machine because last year Lenevo had i3-1215 / 8 GB / 512 GB/ Touchscreen deal for $350 (see link below) and also Walmart had a Lenovo IdeaPad 3i Laptop, 15.6" FHD IPS LED TOUCH, i3-1215U, UHD, 8GB, 512GB for $350. So it is reasonable to assume that a similar deal will come for $300 +/- 50.

This was the best deal for $330 https://slickdeals.net/f/17014378-dell-inspiron-15-3535-touch-laptop-amd-ryzen-5-amd-radeon-8gb-memory-512gb-ssd-carbon-black-329-99?p=166634623#post166634623. Though it does not have a backlit keyboard. The Ryzen 7530U is equivalent to 12th gen i5. Maybe the deal will be back around BF.
