I picked this one up today and can chime in on a few quick things.

Yes, it's not the quickest thing, however it can be very fast with some small tweaks.

1) Opted out of S mode - pretty painless.

2) debloated - just manually uninstalled the preinstalled apps. Im sure there's a quicker way to do it with a script.

3) quick adjustments to turning off privacy, notifications, things that send data to Microsoft.

4) 4GB of memory is soldered and added a 8GB DDR stick on the open RAM Slot. System recognizes 12GB now.

5) Open m2 SSD slot - Popped in a old 250 GB Samsung 970 Plus. Boots perfectly and much faster plus have the built in 128GB eMMC for storage. The SSD operates at 3500Mbps where as the eMMC storage is at around 300Mbps.

6) There is also a SD card slot for more storage.

Includes 1 year of office 365 which is solid value if you were already paying $70 a year for it.

The only con I find is the screen. It is VERY lackluster and leaves alot to be desired. It is usable, but thinking of plugging in a monitor if I was going to do any lengthy work on it.

USB C only does data, no charging or display port, however I knew that going in.

It is light and plasticky in a good way and the blue makes it seem more expensive than it is.

Have been eyeing this, plan to get tomorrow for a family member (already discussed with said person). Just for simple web browsing, most intensive thing would probably be movie streaming, i.e. something larger than using an iphone for viewing. Don't think there's anything else other than chromebooks at this price point for new?

I'm assuming S mode can be opted out/'disabled' at a later time after setup? I haven't ever used S mode before, but things I've seen online seem to indicate this can be done after setup too.

Does Office 365 come as a code? I already have the family 365, wondering if I could pass that on to someone else instead.

Yes you can opt out of S mode later in the settings. I was trying to install Google Chrome and it wouldn't let me until S mode was switched off.

Word is preloaded and at first launch it says "your PC comes with 1 year of office..." Then it asks you to log in to the Microsoft account within office where you want that 1 year applied to. Nothing in the box with a code.

Hmm ok, did it ask for payment information to redeem the 1 year?

Great overview. Thank you for taking the time to post it.
Question about #5: How did you copy the OS to the SSD? Something like Macrium Reflect? Did you have to change the boot order in the BIOS?

Yes I used Macrium Reflect to clone the disk, then the below instructions change the boot disk to the new SSD drive. Afterwards, formatted the 128GB eMMC storage using the disk management tool.

Step 1. Type "UEFI" in the start menu.

Step 2. Click "Change Advanced Startup Option

Step 3. Click "Restart Now" in the Advanced Startup" section

Step 4. After the computer reboots it will come up to a blue screen with "Continue", "Turn off your PC", "Use a device" and "Troubleshoot". Go ahead and click "Troubleshoot"

Step 5. Click "Advanced Options" and click "UEFI Firmware Settings" and click "Restart"

Step 6. This will open the BIOS screen. Go to the "Boot" menu and make sure that option "eMMC" is on the bottom and your SSD is above it.

Correct, however it is located in stock at most stores. The one I went to also had it on display and powered on with the $150 price.

worth the hassle of going in store as you can use the $15 instead to buy a 8GB stick of ram if one doesn't already have one.

Would this be sufficient for reading/printing documents and occasional meetings?

they set it on smode for a reason. cuz its underpowered. its not just a choice during your initial setup. its an indicator of a weak system
I have seen many many 12th Gen core i3 (weak?) laptops come with S mode. It could be switched out with a few clicks for free!

The low-power CPU is obviously not strong but offers relatively good battery life. At least, this one is 4-core. The RAM upgradability and empty M.2 SSD make this a cheap but usable Windows laptop for basic office tasks, streaming, zoom and net surfing.

The 1-year Office 365 subscription alone could cost $50-$70!? already.

The other major weakness is the 1080p but TN panel. But you cannot realistically find a Windows laptop with IPS in this price point. (maybe except Dell refurbished old machines)

Yes, but I would strongly suggest you to pop in an additional stick 8GB RAM (~$15), it will help a lot. On top of this, if you are willing to spend more or already have spare part, the second thing you could do (if you know how) is to add a M.2 NVMe SSD and clone/reinstall the OS to it, and keep the much slower 128GB eMMC for storage.

There is no code. You will be pop up to enter your Microsoft account to activate the subscription. You may consider to enter someone's account info. (on a temporary basis) for that so that the subscription will be credited to your preferred designated account. Then, you may remove that account from the your computer afterwards. A bit tricky but it worked for me in the past.

Direct from MS.

Switching out of S mode is one-way. If you make the switch, you won't be able to go back to Windows 10 or Windows 11 in S mode. There's no charge to switch out of S mode.

On your PC running Windows 11 in S mode, open Settings > System > Activation.

In the Switch to Windows 11 Pro section, select Go to the Store. (If you also see an "Upgrade your edition of Windows" section, be careful not to click the "Go to the Store" link that appears there.)

On the Switch out of S mode (or similar) page that appears in the Microsoft Store, select the Get button. After you see a confirmation message on the page, you'll be able to install apps from outside of the Microsoft Store.
