I bought this truck for my youngest son a couple of years ago and have been pretty happy with it. You'll definitely end up replacing some parts - the plastic differential outdrive cups are a problem that you'll eventually need to replace (we went with metal parts) and we've stripped out a couple of differentials. Overall, it's a very good first truck.

Intro level would suggest the Megalodon Storm, thing is invincible.
Similar would be the Ramp Champ gravedigger, it's got soft tires and can drive up almost anything, so another good intro.
The RC in this deal appears similar in type to the 9125 we bought, it will be the fasting thing ever, for the kid, and it can drive basically anywhere, great for grass driving and pretty waterproof.
Now my guy is almost 7 with a Traxxas Slash, it's got a training mode we keep it on and he drives it around the sidewalks and streets. It's way more than he needs but just proof that they get the hang of anything with enough time (and destruction - we were always repairing something)
The one I bought is now discontinued. But just doing a quick browse on Amazon this would be something I would consider. Main note here is the way the wiring comes out of the rear of the motor instead of the side. Not affiliated with this at all.

Can these things run in snow?
Can these things run in snow?
Absolutely. But keep in mind not 4x4 so anything deep and it's not going anywhere. Packed down snow or ice and it can be a good time. Not waterproof. Water resistant so be mindful.
Awesome, thanks for the response. Kid's birthday is in January so considering this but sucks to not be able to use it for months if it can't drive in snow.
