Canon has announced that the QRM system is dead, fully replaced by the RF series. With that said, the M cameras can still be nice and adapted to use EF lenses. Some of the M lenses like the 22mm are also very nice.

Price n eds to come down quite a bit more to justify this though.

The $500ish for the refurbished RP camera is the much better buy

I had this model with the 15-45mm lens. The HDR is its biggest weakness, probably at the Snapdragon 835 level or even worse. It doesn't perform well as expected in complicated lighting environment, and the dynamic range isn't the best compared to modern flagship phones.

I use M50 II and it is far from crap.

I never did video so I couldn't answer from that perspective. I took pictures in both the desert and the tropics without issue (Other than some short term fogging up going from the cruise ship into the rain forest).

I had the M5 and just sold my M100.

I loved the size of the system but the 24MP sensors Canon had in these were not great. Poor mid and high ISO performance and not great dynamic range.

I recently picked up a Z30 and it blows them out of the water in challenging shooting conditions.

This is a good price for the M200, but honestly I found it uncomfortable without a grip and I was not a huge fan of using the touch screen for everything with my M100

I've heard the M50 and M200 have better AF than the 5/100 I had. That was a huge weakness with the first gen Dual Pixel
The 5 and 100 had the first 24mp sensor, shared with the 77/200/750/760/2000D and I believe the R100. The 50 and 200 have the second generation shared with the 250/800/850D. It's much closer to being ISO invariant and has significantly lower noise and better DR.

My daughter has several EF lenses that I could use for this but the cost of the adapter along with the cost of the camera makes it a tough buy. Is there a less expensive adapter?
Viltrox has one for $36.

They also have a speedbooster adapter (~$150) so if you have full frame EF lenses, you get almost the same focal length with only a little crop. e.g. Canon EF 50mm would give you 57mm with the speedbooster instead of 80mm with a regular adapter.

For most folks, isn't the latest phone models' cameras more than sufficient?
Let me ask this question in a different way - How much do I need to spend on a stand-alone camera before I start to see an observable difference in image quality? Perhaps a continuously variable optical-zoom lens is the real differentiator?

I have an iPhone 13 Pro, and typical use would be for - family events, school performances (child on stage), birthday parties, etc..

Very little, just depends on what you are using it for. Nikon D3300 is one of my favorite cheap used cameras although I generally would spend a little more for the D5300 or D5500. Same sensor and image quality on all three but the D5X00 series adds some nice features such as articulating screen, more advanced autofocus system, built in wifi, etc.

But anyway a D3300 is like $150 used and even when the kit lens it will blow away photos from a photo in the right hands. But someone unfamiliar with photography and just using auto is likely to prefer a high end phone camera. Add another $100 to $150 for an upgraded lens for excellent results.

That just one example that I'd say blows away any phone. Tons of other cheap cameras that are still superior. The main difference is that these cameras lack the AI processing phones use so it takes significantly more photography knowledge and manual effort post processing.

The M200 will be be a lot better too with the right lens and photography knowledge, but I just personally don't like the sensor as much as you can get on cheap Nikon DSLRs or something like a Sony a6000 mirrorless. Better dynamic range from those even if I really do love the M200 + Canon 22'm f/2 lens combo.

For portraits in particular I'd much rather have just about any old DSLR (as little as like $30-40 for the camera body) with cheap large aperture lens ($40-80) over the best smartphone.

For video iPhone is a very compelling option though and will beat most cheaper cameras video quality.

Just curious, unless you're a specialty photographer or a trade professional, do you need dedicated camera hardware anymore? I feel like phones have gotten so good, they pretty much hold their own in the majority of real world scenarios.
Phone cameras are good for wide field shots (and parties), and quick close-ups. And they generally overprocess the shots to make them acceptable. Wanna take a picture of a thing in the store, or your friend at a party, or take a picture of a check to deposit? Super convenient and acceptable pictures. I take a lot of wildlife and landscape pictures, and no phone even compares to a real camera.

Oh, the pricing is almost there... I don't really care about buying new, so I'll wait to see what Canon does with their refurbished ones.

As it has been exhaustively mentioned, the EF-M system has been discontinued. So, as a first camera, maybe it's not the best fit. However, this is an excellent second camera on the cheap. Not all ventures require the larger camera. This camera with the 22mm F2 is an excellent combination.

Now what price would I jump on? Like $230 for a refurbished one... a bit of a long shot but I'm willing to wait. I want to end up under $350 before tax when adding the 22mm F2.

You can always try a 15 pro max as it has 5x optical zoom. Which I think is 120mm equivalent? Would be good for bday party but don't think it would cut it for auditoriums.

For auditoriums you need zoom + aperture. In fact you might want 300mm+. When you realllly zoom in, that's what makes you say "wow, this is so much better than a phone camera". Where real cameras shine is not just real bokeh, and real depth of field in every shot and way less noise, but the ability to shoot at virtually any focal length. 11mm, 400mm, macro, tilt shift, vintage glass, whatever you want.

If my goal was to beat an iphone 15 pro as cheaply as possible I would buy a used canon T2i, for under $100, and pair it with a 75mm-300, or preferably something that goes to 400mm for $100-$200. You'd smoke the iphone with only $200-300. .

But personally, I would go with a mirrorless route, focusing and exposure will be much better. This camera would be great for your purposes if you could pair it with a telephoto.

This. 100%. While it is important to note that the M series cameras and EF-M lens have been discontinued, they are indeed good cameras as long as you find a good price (honestly, nobody should buy old tech at msrp anyways). I have the M50 Mark II as well and freaking love it. Getting an EF-S to EF-M mount is cheap and EF-S lens are widely available. I use my M50 Mark II with its kit lens, and use the mount to make use of all my other EF-S lenses I bought for my T5 in the past. They are awesome. The camera still works with all the EF-S lenses with great results, so I don't give a damn that the M line is discontinued.

Now if I wanna go more serious into photography, I will go to the R line, but that's a different story and price range. These M models are now superb the price.

Bought this for my 13 year old who really wants to get into photography. Bought it as soon as the deal was posted and chose store pickup. Go to the store the next day and they presented me with a nice empty box and a good old friendly "all we can do is offer you a refund". Wouldn't let me move the purchase to another local store where they had more. Same story for Walmart.com. Wouldn't do anything for me.

What does "system is dead" mean for someone who is just buying the camera because they like to take pictures (my 13 year old) and we didn't want to spend $500 on a camera for her

Works with the EOS webcam utility. If price drops further it becomes interesting for me for that use case.
How about using it as a dashcam? 😂
I know it sounds crazy, but just like Linus, I think all dashcams suck.
He recommended GoPro at the end of the video so I guess using this as a dashcam is not that crazy after all.

You'll notice right away when you print the photos in any size larger than 4x6. The post processing artifact from the iPhone is evident and anything larger than 5x7 looks photoshopped. However, if you're just viewing it on a phone screen or sharing on social media, there's no noticeable difference.

Edit: I should add that I use a telephoto lens (75-250mm) for my kids' performances (ballet, karate, soccer and all three play an instrument) and it's been a fantastic investment. I went from a Nikon d7100 to the canon m6 mark ii because I wanted something significantly lighter.

you may get a $100 smartphone to take good photos, never pay a dead system phone for $300 or $500
