In your case : the device credit is on the iPhone 12 mini - but you're planning to put the line number on an unlocked iPhone 12 (which doesn't have any device credits); and won't have any of your line numbers on the 12 mini (which gets the device credits). IF XM does the auto changeover of the sim / device info - you may lose out on the bill credits.
Instead : wait for a BYOD offer on XM (I haven't seen any of their prepaid card offers for a couple of months now; but hopefully they'll bring it back). Or - if you're already on a By-the-Gig plan : add a new line with the iPhone 12, then swap sims. You may want to keep the other line active until all the device credits are complete.
If you don't complete the activation and porting within that period : you forfeit all the credits but are still liable for the full cost of the phone you bought.
Note that the porting is initiated only after activation; and can take a little time depending on the provider, so you need to complete the porting within the 60 day period.XM will know that the line has not been ported; so you would be liable.
If you've changed your mind for any reason - you MAY be able to cancel the service / return the phone; XM does have a "restocking fee" of $35, IDK if you can get that waived. OTOH - if you don't cancel / return; you'd lose all the bill credits for that phone and be liable to pay full price; and you may still need to "activate" the phone to get it unlocked after the payment in full.

The credits didnt show up before porting was completed, they now show up. And there is no difference in the portal between the line I turned the phone on and the line I haven't turned on so far...

I understand there's be a couple $ per phone per month of taxes&fees, but that would work?
What's the catch?
