In before people talk about how the M3 Pro is the worst chip in the new lineup because of the performance cores, total transistors, and memory bandwidth decreasing vs. M2 Pro…
It's still a great machine. Better battery life, brighter SDR, ray tracing (and other GPU improvements), noticeable single core bump, slightly faster SSD, 2GB extra memory, space black color, etc.
18GB isn't really enough for mid to power level users, at least for my workflow. Hopefully the 36GB variant goes down in price sometime soon 🙏
Im running:
- Webstorm
- Docker desktop with post gis
- python API
- node/webpack server
- Tons of Firefox windows
- visual studio code
I'm hitting at most 3gb swap and I open ALL that up on a 16gb M1 Pro. I'd be better with 32/64, but 18gb is enough for most people. I don't even notice when it's swapping.

Well, first of all he said mid to power user. People who edit photos/videos it certainly can limit their workflow with 18GB tbh. I'm running 32GB M1 Max, and my ram usage rarely goes down below 22GB.
I run:
- Pycharm
- Lightroom with light color grading
- Premier Pro every once in a while
- 50~70 chrome tabs
- Docker container
- Terminal, Slack, etc.
