I ordered one to lock this in but am going to keep an eye on the actual Black Friday, cyber Monday prices ready to return if they drop even more.
I kinda doubt it. Not only is this the same price as Prime Day & Black Friday, but this is the recently released 2023 model. I wouldn't think Amazon is pricing these to move just yet.
However, if you want it a little cheaper, you can trade in just about anything for another 20% ($25 off) - if you qualify for the instant savings/rebate. It's YMMV on being eligible for instant trade-in credit but it's not super uncommon.
Google Play can easily be installed on the tablet as-is without root access. Google "Fire tablet Google play store" and follow whichever guide you like. As for actually rooting the device to install a different OS, I'm not so sure.

Yes, you can push media content to your kids profiles on the device. I believe VLC has a version available on the Amazon App Store to help make this happen as well.
Are you talking about Fire tablets in general, or this specific model? The 2021 Fire 10 HD (Gen 11) model was smooth out-of-the-box and this new Gen 13 model is a little bit snappier on top of that. However, the minimum spec Fire 7s I got several years ago were total slogs straight out of the box.
The way to do this:
1. Insert SD card in the tablet, and format it as Portable Storage. You'll want to be in the "Parent/Adult Profile"; and pop out the SD card. You can now use your computer to transfer the videos. I put the videos in the Movies folder. Once done, put the SD card back into the tablet.
2. Install VLC from the Adult profile, and mark it to be installed in the Kids section as well.
3. Switch to the Kids profile, install VLC.
4. Open VLC and enable it to read the SD card. It should populate the videos.
For future head-ache less way since I download videos from Youtube:
1. Install Newpipe on the Adult and download videos to SD card. Newpipe should have a settings tab where you can set the downloads folder.

Oh wow, that's a lot more steps than I thought it would be. I was pretty sure VLC was on the Amazon App Store, and I've seen the parental control app have an option for media files we wished to include on the child profiles. Kudos on getting it eventually to work though!
