Go with Samsung 990 Pro if you intend to encrypt your drive with Windows BitLocker as it supports hardware encryption, SN850X does not:

Samsung just had the 4tb 990 pro for $199 w/EPP and even lower with chase 20% cashback applied.

Meh. Free Cruzer? Cruzers are garbage these days.

The wireless charger with file backup is interesting, but 10W and not knowing if it will work with an Otterbox Defender? (Prolly not) Pass.

I'd go with the Samsung despite being a few bucks more...if they restock it at Samsung that is.

Genuine question, who would need to encrypt their drive? Is this more of a workstation/work place kind of thing, or is there a use case for doing it at home too? Thank you!

Let's say you have a USB flash drive that is unencrypted, anyone who gets hold of that drive can read all the files that are on it. But if the drive is encrypted, they cannot easily do so. The same applies to this SSD.

In the unlikely event that someone breaks into your home and steals your computer, it will stop a hypothetical thief from accessing your files. You can have a password on your computer to protect it, but, they could simply pull the drive and connect it to another computer and gain access to files that way if the drive isn't encrypted. The risk skyrockets if you have a laptop with a removable drive, and spend a lot of time with it out in public.

In the specific scenario being discussed here, you can turn off Windows BitLocker which is known to slow down drives on Win11 (at the moment, hopefully this gets fixed if it hasn't already been). And if the drive has hardware encryption built in, you can activate that instead. So the suggestion to get the Samsung is about having an alternative method of (hardware) encryption to bypass a buggy Windows (software encryption) issue that will slow things down. You can still use software encryption like BitLocker with the SN850X, but your system will take a performance hit until Microsoft addresses the underlying problem.

Do you need it at home? It really depends on what you use the computer for and if there's any risk of anyone accessing your files. If you are a professional with client data to protect? Someone with sketchy room mates? A parent wanting to ensure that more tech savvy and curious children can't access their files for whatever reason... use your imagination.
