Their RAM is pretty good
That is my understanding as well. It helps that it's much easier to sus out any problems with memory than it is flash storage.

I bought one of these off amazon 2 months ago. I used a sabrent usb C enclosure with it on my Macbook Air M1. I started moving over backups and it just kept disconnecting, and extremely randomly. I tried a fan on it to keep cool, the works. I did a amazon replace item and the new one is perfectly fine. Just wanted to share my experience.

I suspect the reason those died is because of heat. This drive (and all Gen4 drives) gets hotter than something like the Gen3 Samsung 970's (which I own 4 of and use daily) which work fine without a heatsink, never exceeding 50C even when performing large file copies of over 200GB at a time. This TeamGroup MP34 has thermal protection but it doesn't throttle until after it exceeds it's max operating temp so I think if you use it without a heatsink it damages itself a little bit every time it gets to that point, so if you're copying large 50GB+ files to it, it may start to throttle and hurt itself, then after a few dozen or a few hundred times doing that it becomes permanently and noticeably damaged. My hypothesis is based on the fact that I own this exact drive and tried using it without a heatsink the first day, closely monitoring the temp of the chips and noticed it got dangerously hot and throttled in the middle of copying a single 80GB file so I immediately added a heatsink and it has been running normally since then, even when I copied over 200GB to it at once, many different times. I bought a second 4TB MP34 a week after the first one when they were $142 on Amazon, both used for bulk storage and copying large files back and forth daily for video editing, also using a heatsink on the second one from day one, and both 4TB drives have been working perfectly for about 3-4 months now even with heavy daily use copying very large files to and from both of them.
What transfer speeds are u getting?
Would think it would help if we added an aftermarket heat sink?

The last time it was it this price, in addition to the 8gb thumb drive and 64gb micro SD card, it also included a 16gb 3200mhz ram kit, valued at about 30 dollars.

I think we might see a decent BF deal. After that, I'm guessing it could be another 6 months, but gen3 drives might start to be phased out of production, and my blind guess would say there will be mid range 4tb gen4 drives like the silicon power drive that will drop to 140-150. Very few will be Dram+tlc at this price.

This is all just a guess based on my own tracking over the years.

This thing is half the speed in read and write compared to the 990 what ate you talking about!?!?
"If used as a game drive, you won't see much of a difference."

He means, in normal operation, things like games and programs will load at practically the same amount of real world time.

Fact check: True

For transferring large files, the key factor is DRAM cache, not rated transfer speed. Both this drive and the Samsung have a DRAM cache. The post admits the Samsung slightly faster.

Fact Check: Though the Samsung is rated at double the speed, the sustained writes (thanks to DRAM cache) will have only a 5-10 second difference for a 200gb file transfer. Therefore, this statement also checks out. Unless you count 5-10 seconds as a huge time save.

The only critique I'd have is that Samsung is probably more reliable, and if transferring an entire archive, it will maybe save you a few minutes.

Just keep these drives cool, with a heatsink/motherboard heatsink.

I was testing the transfer speed within my ds920 nas... file transfer from nvme to the same nvme was 150mbs~ 240mbs for 200 gig folder of mp4 files. But transfer of the same folder from hdd to the nvme was 200 mbs to 270mbs.. could be the limit of my nas.

temp never went over 47c

If both drives are in their ideal environments, the difference in real world experience is marginal. The largest difference will be seen in large file transfers. Perhaps having many many small files, adding up to a large amount, you might start to see the Samsung flex it's muscle. In most use cases, the key factors will be the presence of DRAM for loading/transferring biggish files... And TLC for endurance. The throughput of the gen4 vs gen3 is seem in testing with disk tests, but in normal use, not as much.

Now if something goes wrong, the bias will click on a person's brain, and go 'ahah! It must be because it's gen3!' When in reality it's probably other system related things, like being a mid or low end mobo that doesn't distribute pcie lanes efficiently.

More importantly, this is a Newegg deal. Their reputation has tanked significantly and they earned that. Horrible across the board: quality control, customer service, returns and refunds process, etc.
You're not wrong. When I built my PC, I ordered a ~$350 motherboard from newegg, and they shipped me a ~$130 one. They of course sent me out the correct one--but only after they received and inspected the incorrect one, which took like a week, so indeed, it was I who paid for their error.

I purchased two of the 2TB version earlier this year and they've been working great. Very fast and consistent speeds. Also the nand has very high endurance compared to most alternatives.
