I send my oil to Blackstone Labs to have an analysis done after every oil change. Their experts told me that time is of no worry nowadays with modern oil. The only thing that matters is the mileage.

340k miles on my 03' Toyota Tacoma…my advise: just change the oil no matter what brand (within reason) every 5k or less because it doesn't cost that much to do so…this oil is made by Warren Oil Co btw

Oh, you mean the manufacturers that tell you to use 0W-16 in the U.S. while telling the rest of the world to use 5W-40 to 20W-50 in some cases? Yeah, I bet they're trustworthy. So trustworthy that they're cutting every possible corner, even crucial ones, for the sake of 0.0001% fuel economy gains. These newbie threads are always hilarious.

One acronym: CAFE. Corporate Average Fuel Economy.

The sooner you all learn how toxic it is in the U.S., the sooner you'll distrust the manufacturers and take vehicle care into your own hands.

Does anyone actually believe transmissions are "sealed and require no maintenance for the lifetime of the unit" still? Or does anyone remember Ford back-spec'ing countless 5W-30 vehicles to 5W-20 back in the early 2000s? CAFE is why. It has absolutely nothing to do with the vehicle's best interest. It's purely politics and money.

Signed, banned BITOG alum.
Finally someone spitting some truth. Wait, what is your recommendation? I just fill my engine to the top with 70w-90 synthetic gear oil and change it every 50k miles. Screw those engineers.

Wow, is that overkill? What do they charge to do an analysis?

I change mine when the reminder goes off, sometimes I let it go over. About 160k miles on 09' Odyssey. Plan to drive it to the wheels falls off.
My 09 Odyssey EXL wheels didn't fall off. Transmission gave out at 136k. I have a Pilot Elite and can safely say I will never buy another Honda again.

There is no perfect recommendation for anything. That is the truth, and that is my answer.

Since you seem to be asking my opinion, the best blanket recommendation I can give is 5W-30 for anything unless your vehicle specs a XW-40 or higher. And no, I'm not saying 0/5W-20 is bad and will blow up your engine. Countless Ford modular 4.6Ls in taxis and Crown Vics proved that. But could they have gone longer running a XW-30? Maybe.

For example, a 2016 Hyundai Elantra states in the manual "For better fuel economy, it is recommended to use the engine oil of a viscosity grade SAE 5W-20 (API SM / ILSAC GF-4). However, if the engine oil is not available in your country, select the proper engine oil using the engine oil viscosity chart." The chart shows "5W-20/5W-30" for all temps, and 10W-30 for all temps above 0 degrees Fahrenheit. But that cap says 5W-20. Why? They literally said it themselves in the above quotations - "For better fuel economy..."

I change my oil once a year regardless of mile with mobil one. i open up and remove the valve covers every 4 years on my cars.... they look great. my car takes 9 quarts 0w-40 so i guess it has a lot of quarts to play with over the year. you just need to go by the owners manual suggested invervals. my mercedes S and ML say once a year mobil1.
Those cars starts breaking down big time once they reach about 80k mi.

I guess another way to think about CAFE is that if we did not have it since the 1970's our cars would be getting less than 9 mpg. CAFE is also the reason a Corvette now has over 450hp and gets 27 mpg on the highway.Applause
So all is not bad.

Is this REALLY 0W-20? Most of the cheap oils like this that have claimed to be 0W-20 have since relabeled themselves as 5W-20. It's impossible to make 0W-20 in anything other than a true synthetic. Some oils that label themselves as synthetic are not truly synthetic oil... they are closer to a synthetic blend. It depends on the percentage of the mix..... kind of like how 2x4's are not really 2" x 4". They are cut to the limit of what is considered a 2x4.... 1.5" x 3.5". And how lifetime warranties are not really for the life of ownership but for what would be considered the usable life of the product.

I agree they have driven progress, but they are mandating too much progress too fast in the last 20 years or so. But do you really think these 3 cylinder turbocharged, DI, VCT, CVT, LGBTQWXCVE atrocities are going to go the distance? No. Because they were designed with one goal: CAFE credits.

Remember the Aveo? Lmao.

Engineering is not the only consideration on specifications and can often be a compromise. Cost of ownership (routine maintenance), fuel economy and production costs can have a much higher factor in those final decisions. It is not uncommon for a manufacturer to change oil specs on a car 2 years later with the same engine and back date compatibility with previous years. So which oil weight and change interval is better? The original one or the newer one? That being said, too many factors and internet scientists can't predict that either and your uncles friends cousin doesn't count as a good source. Only way is to sample and send out to a lab and see every so often. I gave up and settled on 5k or yearly of cheapest that month full synthetic.

Not necessarily true. I have a Lexus that calls for 5w-30. A few years later they went to 0w-20 with the same engine. I have another Lexus with the same block that uses 0w-20 and a Toyota with the same block that uses 0w-20. Lexus has a vehicle oil compatibility chart. It specifically states that I cannot use 0w-20 in the vehicle that takes 5W-30 and go on to state that it may damage the engine. So your statement is not 100% correct. I believe it depends on other factors such as the oil pump etc.

I thought synthetic oil can last for a year if mileage used is low. That's something I heard but I'm no expert so was wondering now if I should change the oil earlier.
mileage is the important part , it can last for years
change it before 5000 or 3500

Of course it's really 0W-20.

And there are 0W-20 syn blends:
