This is the hub after Samsung's dumbshit decision to snub Z-Wave because the lobbyists behind Zigbee, etc. throw more influence around with billionaire corporations.

I still have the Smartthings hub v2 from before Samsung took over. Is this worth upgrading to for $40? Not sure the improvements over my current hub.

Edit: looks like this isn't a hub but an additional station that acts as a button for quick routine activation?

This is a hub but lacking z-wave support as the first response mentioned. The only new benefit over hub V2 is the station is matter compatible with a thread border router built in so you can add matter devices over thread directly.

Isn't matter supposed to unify all platforms?

So... Would it be good to have multiple of these? Or can you only have 1 hub?!

Note if u have a samsung soundbar it has inbuilt hub function in it. This is more of a wireless charger than a station if u ask me.

New to the Smart Home game but my hunch is that they omitted Z-Wave for cost savings with the idea that going forward most new devices will be on Thread, which is backed by Zigbee. I don't have experience with Z-Wave but understand it was more stable than Zigbee - but if you already got that system, no need to buy this hub. I'm starting a new Smart Home and this seems like a good buy for a DIY self-monitored home security system.

My understanding is you can have multiple hubs and they work together to extend the mesh network. You should also be able to use them as independent triggers for automations.

think of it as a common protocol that can communicate with devices on different platforms. to connect matter devices with a hub, one would need a thread border router (TBR), which the Smartthings Station has built-in if you don't already have. OP's old Hub V2 lacks TBR

This also has a wireless charger and smart button (single press, hold, double press) to control devices or automations. Also has TBR built-in (see above post)

This explains what a Thread Border Router is, and what devices already have it built in:https://matter-smarthome.de/en/kn...er-router/

Typical Border Routers
In principle, any product that supports the Thread standard can also be a border router at the same time. It only has to have a constant power supply and contact with the home IP network via Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable. So far, the function is mainly found in smart speakers and smart displays, in smart home hubs and other network devices. Typical representatives include:
Aeotec Smart Home Hub (SmartThings)
Amazon Echo (4th Gen.)
Amazon Eero 6 Wifi router
Amazon Eero 6 Pro Wifi router
Apple HomePod (2nd Gen.)
Apple HomePod mini
Apple TV 4K (2nd Gen. / 3rd Gen. with Wi-Fi + Ethernet)
Google Nest Hub (2nd Gen.)
Google Nest Hub Max
Google Nest Wifi router
Google Nest Wifi Pro router
Nanoleaf Lines (Firmware 8.5.2)
Nanoleaf Shapes (Firmware 8.5.2)
Nanoleaf Elements (Firmware 8.5.2)
Samsung SmartThings Hub (v3)

My understanding is you can have multiple hubs and they work together to extend the mesh network. You should also be able to use them as independent triggers for automations.
These decisions are usually a matter of egotism and lust for proprietary products that stifle competition to maximize short-term profits. If you polled the SmartThings core community as to whether they wanted this hub to include Z-Wave support, and whether Samsung passing along the extra dollar or so for the licensing fee is worth it (even though they didn't in years past), of course the vote would be unanimously in favor of including Z-Wave. Samsung could care less because they've gotten spoiled by dominating the HA space. But if my V2 hub breaks and I need a new one, I'll look at whatever crazy amount Aeotech or whatever is charging, and recalibrate my system, leaving Samsung behind. Hope others follow.

Sorry for the noob question, but can I use this to run any Zigbee device plug-and-play, e.g. Aqara door sensors and smart plugs, or would I need another bridge for that to happen?

This functions as a zigbee hub, i connected my philips hue bulbs to it. Beware it only has zigbee and no Z-wave unlike samsung smartthings hub v2.
