I avoid Duracell alkaline like plague because the the new cells leaked while in original packaging well before expiration. I offered to send Duracell the leaked cells as research samples and they replied with a coupon instead of following up to investigate. I wouldn't buy Duracell alkaline even if it's free after rebate.

Exactly this!! I've taken advantage of this offer year after year and fell victim to quite a few high price items like Apple keyboards and touch pads that were destroyed by leaking batteries. Always these ones, and all of them were still far away from expiration. No other brand that's ever given me such trouble. Stopped buying into this sort of Russian Roulette a few years ago, much better for the blood pressure. And for those who think the manufacturer stands behinds its promise with repairing or replacing damaged items, go ahead and try a dry run, see how far you get, how much time and effort you have to invest for the occasional $35 claim here and $85 claim there. I don't have time for garbage products, this brand is blacklisted, moving on.

YES! I was down to buying paper towels with a 25% back in rewards yeasterday, but this is what I waited for. Amerzon has the aa 16pack for $12 to pm as well. OD/OM also sells the $10 PNY micro sd card that Amerzon has on sale for $10 and I almost went that route too.

Can you explain the reason for the split purchase? Thx
Battery promo allows max of 2 items, and run from Nov 19 to Dec 2nd. OD also have ink recycling rewards back, once a month for 10 cartridge, if you purchase items over $10 out of pocket. These two promo can be stacked to get OD rewards combinations.

So buy one battery (let say $15 out of pocket) in Nov, and recycle 10 ink cartridge in Nov (gets you $20 rewards)....so total you will get $15+$20=$35 in OD rewards, which is only good at OD.

Repeat for Dec on 1st or 2nd. Note that OD rewards should not be used for battery payment.

It is limit 2, but we won't know if the limit is for each week or the two week period until someone buys a third package on 11/26. Assuming it's limit 2 for the two week period, someone could satisfy the $10 spend requirement for Nov and Dec with one purchase in Nov and then a second purchase on 12/1 or 12/2. HTH

Just a hint to deal with battery corrosion (without heavy scrubbing): the leak is usually very strong alkali (base) like Potassium Hydroxide. Normally acid and water eats metal/electronics while most bases (like baking soda) don't, yet Potassium Hydroxide corrodes metals.

When people clean circuit boards with baking soda, they are using it as an abrasive paste, not the baking soda solution itself that chemically strips the contaimants. That's why the procedure below is basically neutralizing a strong base (alkali) so strong that'd eat metal with a weak acid (vinegar/citric acid), then neutralize the excess weak acid again with a weak base (baking soda) that normally won't eat metals.

Technically for non-sensitive circuits that wouldn't tolerate a little bit of cross talk from baking soda residue, you don't really have to rinse it with water. Pure rubbing alcohol doesn't dissolve baking soda so if you skip the water rinsing you might see a little bit of white stuff left on it. Nonetheless I recommend a water rinse so you don't end up troubeshooting down the line.

Buy some cheap syringes as applicators (doesn't have to be medical):
  • 1 for food acid (I bought citric acid to descale pots as it doesn't have the terrible vinegar smell. Use the least amount of water to fully dissolve it. Lemon juice has sugar in it so it's just extra crap to clean afterwards)
  • 1 for baking soda solution (use the least amount of water to fully dissolve it)
  • 1 for water 'rinse'
  • 1 for rubbing alcohol to dry out the moisture
  1. Put a drop of citric acid on the corrosion and see it bubble and add until everything dissolved.
  2. Wipe the reacted salt water away with tissue/kitchen towel/cotton swabs
  3. Neutralize the excess acid left with a drop of baking soda each time until there are no more bubbles.
  4. Add a few drops of water to pick up the baking soda residue (use syringes so the water doesn't go to places you don't intend and ruin the electronics)
  5. Wick the rinse solution (water that picked up the baking soda residue) away
  6. Add a few drops of rubbing alcohol (99% if you know where to buy it. 91% can be found in groceries, 70% only if you are too cheap) to suck up the moisture and evaporate it away. The more water content in the rubbing alcohol, the longer it takes to evaporate
  7. You can accelerate the drying by blowing cold or warm air (less than 100 degree C please). Leaf blower works if you can grab the object tight so it won't be blown away. Or leave it out for a day before using it just to play safe.
The proper way is to take it apart and do the above, but if it's just a remote control or wireless keyboard that you have little to lose, this should do the trick.

Interesting question and I would guess you are right, but would not have to if the coupon come off as a payment. Did I miss Duracells in this weeks mailer?

In my experience, Duracells leaks consistently and it has nothing to do with how you use the cells or how you store it. It's a race to use up the battery as fast as you can before ticking timebomb sets off. I now believe the reason it leaks in remote controls is just because you didn't dispose the cells fast enough and it has nothing to do with whether the cells fully charged or empty.

One example is my remote control which I use every day. One day I saw white stuff coming out of it despite the remote control was still working. I immediately treated the remote control while the leak was fresh so the damage was limited. The Duraleaks are not gradual: it's an small explosive event and most people didn't notice the leaks because the battery was still working until the corrosion brought down the device before the juice was used up. The battery compartment in my remote control borders the edge of the plastic body so when the Duracell battery busted a load the whole remote bar got icky white laugh out loud. That's how I got caught the leak early.

No. That would be "rolling" rewards and will not work. Rewards on anything require oop (out of pocket) spending.

In the past, duracell manufacturer's coupon didn't scan, so they had to deduct the coupon value from the sales price = yes, its use did reduce the rewards in that case.

Sorry for the newbie questions but I haven't done OD rewards in years. When do the rewards post in our accounts? Is it issued as one amount or separate certificates? If I buy 2 packs in week 1 and 2 packs in week 2, do all 4 rewards get combined into one that needs to be used up in 1 purchase? Or do they come as 4 rewards and only one can be used in each future purchase?
Assuming your Week 2 battery purchase is done Dec 1 or 2, you would have a Rewards cert for November (exp 2/29/24) and one for December (exp 3/31/24). Yesterday I bought 16 AA pm'd to $14.99 and recycled 10 ink cartridges ($20), all in one transaction at the register, and I'm showing $34.99 in my account today.

You can spend Rewards like individual gift cards online, or in-store they will pull up your combined Rewards total at the register and blanket apply it to your purchase, in order from oldest to newest Rewards. Any leftover Rewards balance is retained in your account. If you don't have enough Rewards to cover a transaction, you'll be prompted for additional cash/credit/whatever for the balance due. It's effectively a virtual store gift card (that doesn't count for out of pocket spending or generate additional Rewards i.e. "roll").

Just out of curiosity, why is the 16 pack of AAA more expensive than the 24 pack?
