Free offline GPS maps with tons of trails and waypoints. Haven't used Alltrails for years since I started using that.

The key point of an app like this is to download maps and use them offline which is not available under Gaia free membership. You need premium subscription to do that.

These 50% off promos occur quite frequently. I wouldn't be surprised if there is Valentines Day promotion or Easter promotion. Keep a lookout for them. I usually get these promotions from alltrails so I guess it is good to sign up for their emails.

This is a good deal, however I would like also to suggest the app Workoutdoors that I use daily on my Apple Watch: it allows maps downloads and I find the trails identical or very similar to the ones in Alltrails, with the difference that is a one time payment of around 5 dollars. I find useful the Alltrails notification whenever I go out of trail but a part that for me there is not too much to justify the paid version, knowing that I can explore the trails when I have internet and then follow them in Workoutdoors.

This is just a personal reason but AllTrails bought up my favorite hiking app just to let it die, so I only use the free version.

I also started using Avenza maps recently, which is pretty bare bones, but it works offline for free and IMHO sometimes less is more.

ill shill for AllTrails then LMAO with the pro version and a smart watch w/ alerts the subscription paid for itself. Ive done some well marked trails that will split off to very poorly unmarked trails. The notifications usually tell me im off course after about 5 min. All the time Ive saved not having to back track makes it totally worth it!

And for about a full year I used only the free version. I had one annoying incident where my phone overheated and reset while out of service causing the map I had open to not reload. That experience told me to always download Googlemaps offline if you're going to cheap out and not have a paid maps. Gaia gps is another one that as long as the phone doesnt turn off and your have the map loaded you can essentially have a similar all trails experience. But I digress download maps is a great feature.

Joke: The All Trails+ experience is all about creating new trails and marking them easier than you should just to infuriate people who comment the 3 mile hike was 6.

I've always gotten ~ 15$ a year on this buying during some holiday promotion… and yet, nearly NEVER used it. IF you really want to hike and will do it, and don't really pretty much know where to go, DO IT and this is a great app. But I doubt I'll even take a $15 annual going forward.. now with Apple Watch and iphone allowing full topo downloads, etc.
