I don't really follow– why would I want/need to run a Windows VM, or upgrade the NAS's CPU/GPU? I have a Windows PC I built for gaming some time ago but these days I don't really have much time for it, unfortunately. I also have Ring cameras so no need to hook up security cameras or record footage to the NAS.
This should be more than adequate for any basic NAS needs. Power will be comparable to a DS920+ (since the 923+ has an AMD CPU). The Synology will likely be easier for a beginner but, as you mentioned, the QNAP will be more futureproof due to having better hardware to start and being more easily and cheaply upgraded. If you have or are considering multigig networking in the future, the QNAP would be the way to go, depending on how far into the future that might be.

Question for someone who might know: can I just pop in 2 nvme drives, a pice nvme card and say use a total of 4 nvme drives as raid 5/6 while leaving the drive bays empty for now? Not going for speed, it's just that nvme drives are easier to come by these days it seems, or they are just as expensive.

EDIT: answering my own question, this is apparently possible, but only with Qnaps' own crazy expensive pice card. While some 3rd party cards may work, the software lets you use the drives on those only as cache. Lame, but oh well.

Dang I just realized that the 4GB model of this has hard soldered RAM vs the 2 GB model has upgradable memory. I guess this is going back to Amazon. Why Qnap, WHY?! Guess I'm going for the 2GB model that Newegg has for $375.

I am just sharing the features or other things that you can do with it. If you can use all its features, then you will get more of your money. If you cannot see the use of it, then obviously this is not for you. You are better of looking for something cheaper.

Other people are creative and smart enough to use the included features. You can use its VPN (server or client), Virtual Network, run some dockers (for automation, controllers etc), use Windows VM to hide your tracks on activities like P2P, host your website, run your database, run a virtual PFsense, backup your cloud storage, 24/7 Plex server at blinding speed (if you add video card), act as cloud storage for your phone, home automation, music server, photo server, IFTTT, use to Backup and restore your desktop, surveillance cam as mentioned earlier (your Ring is useless without internet while your QNAP will still record with or without internet).. pretty much you can do almost anything because you can virtualize things. Your imagination is the limit.

Ah, I see, thank you for the clarification! This definitely seems more capable than the Synology but I still need to see if my particular use case justifies the extra cost. Ultimately I'm leaning more towards this just to build upon it in the future.

Sorry, one last question: what would be the advantage of this over, say, building my own PC and putting the hard drives in it? Not sure how Windows does acting as an OS for a machine mainly used as a NAS, and while I've never used Linux I'm sure there's a distro that's geared towards this.

I had purchased the TS-462 2G and can confirm it has upgradable SODIMM slots and can also accept 2 - M.2 drives. This deal is cheaper than the prime day deal from a couple of months ago. The prime day deal was $398 vs $375 of this deal. I just picked up another. I think my TS 451+ is having that old the LPC clock issue. I'll probably take time to fix it, but I'd rather just put the drives into a new NAS. Then I'll do the temporary fix for the 451+.

  • Power efficiency. The QNAP will be more efficient especially if you run it 24/7/365
  • Portability
  • Ease of use. Easy to put drives in and out. Easy RAID rebuild.
  • Install QNAP apps. [qnap.com] If you don't need Plex, you don't have to install it etc.
  • Available Mobile Apps (Android/iOS). Example, you can check your cameras on your phone, save pictures directly to your NAS, etc. QNAP has different apps for different applications.
  • Has more features
  • QNAP Support
  • QNAP security updates
NOTE: I am a 9yr Synology and Xpenology user, but I moved to QNAP in 2017. They are pretty much the same, but QNAP offers more powerful/modular/upgradeable hardware at a more affordable price.
NOTE2: I hear Qnap users being a victim of ransomware, but I never had it (I have 2 Qnap that backs up each other). I hope this is not a marketing gimmick of the other. The competition and followers of each NAS (Synology/QNAP) are fierce and too loyal. It's like hearing fanboys of Intel/AMD, Android/iOS, Windows/MacOS, ... For me , both NAS are pretty much the same,,, I've used both and I like both, but I just needed a powerful affordable hardware that Qnap happens to offer.

This is exactly what happened to me (dead 451+ due to the clock bug). Did the temporary resistor hack to get it working again and upgraded the SW so I could migrate the drives over. I went with a 464. Got the 4GB model for 425 on eBay (with some pretty high shipping charges) and pulled the 8GB RAM model from the 451+ so I've got 12GB in the 464 now

Running 4x 8TB drives in RAID10. RAID5 at these drive sizes is a BAD idea. RAID6 would work, but gives the same effective storage (16TB) as RAID10 and RAID10 will rebuild MUCH faster if it comes to that. Have a cold spare 8TB waiting for when I need it.

Just to offer an alternative point of view... after looking into QNAP and Synology dedicated machines, I rolled my own NAS using an older motherboard, case and power supply I had from an old HTPC build. It's quiet and efficient, but I do have to open the case to swap hard drives. I also have 6 3.5 bays. Plus two 2.5" laptop drives will also fit into 1 bay. I'm reusing old drives with varying capacities for now. I can't exactly say it was free--but I'd already bought all of what I am using.

As for NAS software, RockStor (my preference), NextCloud, FreeNAS or TrueNAS are easy to set up, and there even more alternatives like OwnCloud, OpenMediaVault, LibreElec, or even ProxMox. Which is best depends on your usecase and the linux flavor you prefer.

If you use BTRFS you can throw any old disks into the mix. I like that even with unmatched drives, the software can figure out how to build a redundant storage pool (though using matched drives is definitely faster). Of course ZFS or mdadm RAIDs are arguably more stable. But for home use with random drives I like the ease of BTRFS.

It all depends on what your hobbies and needs are.

What's the old LPC clock issue? I've got a 431+ right now and while it's working fine, just debating if it's wise to upgrade to this or not.

NVM. Looks like that's only for Intel based units. The 431+ has an ARM CPU.

Seems like they're identical except that the 2G model has memory slots rather than soldered memory. I ordered the 2G version along with 2x8 gb of ram from Newegg instead.

Interesting. I hadn't even heared about the clock issue. My TS-451+ is still running just fine, maybe I'm lucky and got a revised unit (bought it Nov 2016)...

There is no patched version unfortunately. It is a hardware problem and QNAP continued selling the flawed part long after Intel disclosed the problem and offered no remediation or consolation for the flawed units they had sold. So it's not a matter of if, but when it will fail. Mine had been running continuously since January 2018 and suddenly died in April of this year while I was on a business trip. In fact, it continued to run but I had to reboot it and it never worked after the reboot. A simple resistor (in an inconvenient location) temporarily restored it long enough to make sure I was on the latest version of the SW so the drives would seamlessly move over to the new QNAP.
