I think they're referring to price-per-TB, so 18 TB for $200 ($11.11/TB) is fairly close to 14TB for $150 ($10.71/TB).

Excellent price per TB, but for almost the same price you can get the WD 18TB from Best Buy which people say is more reliable (in my experience all the major brands are all the same)

Depends on scale of your setup.

For example I have 20 drives, having them in external housings with 20 power bricks wouldn't ideal.

Instead I have a server running in basement.

Also if you shuck them and put it in proper setup you also have proper cooling.

Drives in these external enclosures often run hot.

They were in my local store about a week ago at regular price. You can call your store and give them the item number and they'll check local stock.

Thanks. But I thought freedom flex being a Mastercard is not accepted?
And I checked: chase freedom unlimited (visa) doesn't have that offer.

Noob here. I just bought a NAS for Plex. Would this be a good hdd to shuck and use for my drives?
In my experience, you do not need a NAS for plex. I use an external drive straight out of the box via USB. I have a 10 year old dell Small Factor PC running Linux and PLEX server from a 256gb SSD and 20gb of DDR3 ram. Most of my media is in 720p and 1080p and works great on my home network PCs and TVs.

I went through a bunch of these Seagate external drives, just like this one, of various sizes, and the 14TB model shown here was the only one to ever give me problems. Constant clicking and disconnects. Guess I got the bad apple of the bunch. Good luck to others

ah.. well my NAS is a PC in a 4U server case with hot swap drive cages, so that's my frame of reference. actually,my drive cages don't have this line in them anyway, so I don't need to use it, but I've used those adapters when I use the drive on a standard PC. I don't know about much else, but I assume you are referring to a synlogy or something, yeah I don't know how those are constructed.

As far as why this needed, there's a 3.3V signal that some drives look before they enable themselves. here's a good video:

LOL - never saw that before. Easy fix if needed. THANKS Smilie
It's easy if you have an adapter lying around, but most people won't.

The tape trick is pretty easy as well. Kapton tape is preferred, but regular scotch tape will also work. Very few people even know what kapton tape is. I've heard of using electrical tape, but I think that might be a bit too thick and may migrate over time.
