I think they're referring to price-per-TB, so 18 TB for $200 ($11.11/TB) is fairly close to 14TB for $150 ($10.71/TB).
Excellent price per TB, but for almost the same price you can get the WD 18TB from Best Buy which people say is more reliable (in my experience all the major brands are all the same)
Depends on scale of your setup.

For example I have 20 drives, having them in external housings with 20 power bricks wouldn't ideal.

Instead I have a server running in basement.

Also if you shuck them and put it in proper setup you also have proper cooling.

Drives in these external enclosures often run hot.

Shucked mine, started a read test with Hard Disk Sentinel yesterday, got about halfway through and stopped reading sectors. Tried a couple other tests and all failed immediately then the drive stopped showing any available disk space at all. 😩

This might not have been the drive. Put it back in the case it came in and it fired right up. Has been running a read test for 14+ hours now with zero errors so I'm suspecting it was my PC setup or a bad sata cable that flagged it the first time.

Edit: Can confirm my drive is good. Replaced all my serial cables and drive is running just fine.

There is still stock at various Costco's. Struggling to decide between shucking or waiting for a recert at $100ish price range.

Confirmed Exos mach 2 drives. I am doing two of these with two 16TB iron wolf pro from B&H in SHR.

Is there an "easy" way to shuck these without causing too much damage to the case? Thanks in advance.

I broke the clips. Plus there really isn't a way to remove the sponge foam and the foil tape without Seagate knowing you tamper with it anyway. So as careful as you want to be, you can say bye to the warranty

Assuming, you want to keep the case for future warranty lol. No way Jose

For anyone who has not shucked their drive and are using it as a USB external hard drive, have you figured out how to set this thing in Windows so that it doesn't constantly go to sleep?

I'll access a file, do what I need to do, close it. Then a couple minutes later, I'll access another file. Every time, the drive has to wake up, start spinning, and then it will load. This is getting old.

I have shucked Seagate drives and put them back in the case to RMA them back to Seagate. Everything went just fine. Case wasn't perfect because most of the clips were broken, but it went back together well enough.

If you are in the USA, there are laws against voiding warranties for disassembly as long as the product wasn't damaged by the consumer. The company has to prove the consumer damaged the product. Probably in a grey area with shucked drives, but the raw drive inside is undamaged.

I've heard WD will honor shucked drive replacements without the case, but I haven't heard that from Seagate. Just throw the drive back in the case and avoid any issues.

For anyone else looking for a solution, I found one.

Install the Seagate Dashboard application.

https://www.seagate.com/support/s...dashboard/

This application has a setting that keeps the drive awake. It works.

I picked one up in store today. The sale ends tomorrow. If anyone is in Atlanta GA. Brookhaven had around 10 left after I got mine today. Athens has like 20 in stock. This will make a great TimeMachine drive to be a 4th back up. 3,2,1 back up

This deal may still be available in-store at your local Costco. I saw the drive at one of the three local stores marked $199.99, but at the register it rang up $149.99.

Only a few left in stock and only that one store so YMMV.

Just picked this up for $99.99 in Chicago area. Couldn't believe my eyes. Bought 4 when OP posted this and thought that was a steal!
