I have had a few Braun models over the years. Recently I have the series 9 from Costco, a first for me. Series 9, pay the extra.
Anyone who's used both have an opinion on this vs. the Panasonic Arc5?

It does. My old Series 7 came with the cleaning station too, but I didn't want to keep buying cleaning cartridges or have it take up space.

I empty them out and fill with 90% alcohol from Walgreens. I've been doing this for 10 years without issue.

The MSDS for the Braun liquid shows it's just alcohol, blue dye, and I think perfume. You can refill them each about 10 times, just have to make sure the delicate screen in the larger hole is still attached to the plastic. I think this is something they do to combat refilling

I have had the Costco version for over a year now. Works good. And Costco forever return policy.

Another option is to use the genuine Braun refills. And then "recap" them with the seal caps. Kind of a hassle, but if you uncap them, load in the base, clean the razor, then pull it out and recap it will last much longer.

The main reason the refills don't last long is due to evaporation (not cleaning the razor). So if you pull the refill out each time and recap it, then they last significantly longer.

Also, it is more than just alcohol, the scent (I think lemon oil) also lubricates the razor. Alcohol won't lubricate the razor. In fact, Alcohol alone will dry out the razor and be more of an unlubricated metal-to-metal action.

I have coarse facial hair and it seems rotary shavers work best. Although I have to follow up with normal razor and cream every time

Would cleaning in alcohol and then dipping it in mineral oil work?

I bought the one from Costco when it was on sale last year, I don't really recommend it. The cleaning station that they provided takes a long time to clean and the blades were still kinda wet after a long time after the drying process inside the station. The blades itself, after less than a year, does not shave well anymore, like I have to press it down really hard to get a semi clean shave. I think I'm going to go back to Panasonic.

I think they expect you to not use it for another day in which time the alcohol would have evaporated.
Some of the higher braun model cleaning stations have a drying function that uses heat

I did some research because I wanted to be sure about the lubrication part. I have been doing this for 10 years with no issues except for the plastic and paint starting to wear (likely due to the alcohol) but that's anecdotal evidence.

The MSDS for the Braun Clean and Renew indicates three chemicals. I put the most common use below the name.

Propanol 71-23-8
Solvant, disinfectant

ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL 67-63-0
Disinfectant, anti septic

LIMONENE 138-86-3
Fragrance , citrus

I added what those chemicals are commonly used for. The first two are obviously for cleaning. As for the limonene, it's a hydrocarbon, but I don't see any indication it's used as a lubricant. The main sellers of the chemical offer it up as a citrus fragrance.

Even if it was being used as a lubricant, the viscosity is extremely low, simply rub your fingers in the original solution . The high percentage of the solution being alcohol would completely neutralize limonene as a lubriant. Alcohols are used as cleaning solvant for oils.

Love my older Norelco triple header 1312...I remember the ads saying you can't get a closer shave, so I am very hesitant to believe this Braun can actually give me closer shave than that.

Also wondering this same thing. I just ordered the Panasonic Arc5 for just over 100 recently and it's arriving tomorrow. The Braun wasn't on sale at the time.

I paid $15 (NIB) for a series 9 at one of those Amazon return bin stores and it's pretty nice, if this compares I'd get it.

In the end. This is a fancy brand foil shaver right? With flex. Most foil shavers don't flex. Overall. I've never gotten anything better than my old sensotouch 3d. The replacements were not available at the time. And the battery died on me after 10yrs. I did order the replacement battery but at some point I did something wrong and it would not accept charge. So I'm in the market for something. I have generic foil shavers that although do a very good job I believe more is better. So some are 3 blades some are more. The panasonic arc 5 has five "shavers"(foil) the circular shavers in my opinion work better because of the way they cut. Add flex to any machine and it will glide better flex heads on a 3d(or more) will be a better cut.
