1- Buy Straight Talk device
2- Make sure the SIM card that came with phone is inserted.
3- Buy $10, 30-day plan from TracFone eBay store
4- You will receive a 15 digit pin for the 30 day plan on your email associated to ebay account.
5- Go to TracFone website, go to "Contact Us" tab, select Chat, ask to chat with a live agent
6- Tell the agent you want to activate a new phone (you don't even have to mention that you want to rebrand from Straight Talk to Tracfone)
7- Agent will ask you for the device IMEI, email address (idk why but just provide a email)
8- Agent will ask you if you already have an airtime plan or if you want to buy one, we already have the 15 digit PIN that we bought from eBay, so provide that PIN to the agent
9- Power off and turn on the phone, your phone should be activated by now, make a few test calls and/or texts
10- Text UNLOCK to 611611
11- You should receive a text saying "Congrats, your device will be eligible to unlock" in 60 days.
and just like that your device should be elegible to be unlocked in 60 days, the unlock is not automatic on android devices, only Apple devices will automatically unlock, you will have to contact TracFone costumer service in 60 days and they will help you unlock it.
EDIT: CHAT customer service saved the day.
Update - this was quite the annoying process. Just save yourself a ton of time and ask them to rebrand it lol. I went through the whole spiel of acting like I just bought a phone from them and had issues getting it connected. Wasted all of that time with the original rep to get transferred to customer care then go through it with them giving the imei etc for them to say "looks like you made your account with straight talk". I asked him about rebranding he said I can do that for you no problem.
Buy $9.99 basic phone plan from tracfone on ebay. You get the 15 digit code by email like 10 minutes later.
Download the tracfone app and use the support chat icon on the top right.
Tell them you bought the phone on straight talk but want to activate it with tracfone because you already have a plan pin.
They will setup an account for you with tracfone
You get an email to reset password for tracfone account, login, manage lines, activate with pin from ebay
There was also a recent news about possible changes coming to these prepaid brands after November 2024. Not much details known.

The sound and picture are especially good. Unless you are a serious gamer, this would be more than sufficient for most users.
On the phone, I get the verizon 5G service sign, but no calls could be made etc.

CSR said that since the phone was rebranded from Straight Talk, it now is showing as customer own device in their system, but I should not worry, they would be able to unlock me in 60 days anyways.

That said unlocking is generally not a problem with them.
However their systems are full of security loopholes. Only last year they had thousands of phone numbers stolen i.e. scammers ported out numbers from their system without customer knowledge.
They also have been bleeding customers badly and long term survival is a question mark at least in the current form.
It's OK for a kids line or secondary phone but I would not trust them with a line where your number is tied to a bank, 2FA etc.
I suspect they are forced to run these deals cause there is no other way anyone would do business with them. And they are trying to ramp up the account volume before year closing.
BUT, Target has 15% discount on the $15 plan, and extra 5% if you pay with RedCard.
Saw some1 mention it has full complement of supported frequencies ?
