Ok to everyone that wants to unlock the device, I just did it and the process is kinda simple:
1- Buy Straight Talk device
2- Make sure the SIM card that came with phone is inserted.
3- Buy $10, 30-day plan from TracFone eBay store
4- You will receive a 15 digit pin for the 30 day plan on your email associated to ebay account.
5- Go to TracFone website, go to "Contact Us" tab, select Chat, ask to chat with a live agent
6- Tell the agent you want to activate a new phone (you don't even have to mention that you want to rebrand from Straight Talk to Tracfone)
7- Agent will ask you for the device IMEI, email address (idk why but just provide a email)
8- Agent will ask you if you already have an airtime plan or if you want to buy one, we already have the 15 digit PIN that we bought from eBay, so provide that PIN to the agent
9- Power off and turn on the phone, your phone should be activated by now, make a few test calls and/or texts
10- Text UNLOCK to 611611
11- You should receive a text saying "Congrats, your device will be eligible to unlock" in 60 days.

and just like that your device should be elegible to be unlocked in 60 days, the unlock is not automatic on android devices, only Apple devices will automatically unlock, you will have to contact TracFone costumer service in 60 days and they will help you unlock it.

it really bothers me that I feel like I need a college degree in phones and asterisk read below jargon to understand this. CAn I purchase this just to connect to wifi at home and use like a tablet? I also just need this to take pictures for work for me. I have to take a lot of pictures at work and am tired of using my dedicated phone for such (No my work will no provide me with a phone, this is just something i do because it legitimately helps me work faster and i work off bonuses so they will not provide)
Yes and yes.

yes, even locked phone should work as you desired. working as a local/wifi only device normally at home without cellular service. but the reason this deal seemingly a great deal is also because it can be unlocked with minor work and wait, (just activate it on a cheap plan (either $35 plan on Straighttalk or go through Customer service to activate on tracfone $10/$15 plan for only 1 month and wait a total of 60 days until unlock). so u have a fully unlocked phone to use on any carrier. if u do not care about it being unlocked and only want it on WIFI locally, u do not have to go through all that extra work. and you are not limited to this particular phone. if you want to use mostly for pictures, u can also consider the other. pxiel 6a phone deal for $99.

If it's for taking pictures, pixel 6a will be the better choice

I can't activate the phone from TF website, while trying to activate the phone through e-sim I get the congratulatory pop-up that the phone can be activated but then I get the error for IMEI2. I wonder if I have to get an actual physical sim for it to go through.

EDIT: CHAT customer service saved the day.
How did this get fixed? I tried the process using the sim card number and it still failed

Update - this was quite the annoying process. Just save yourself a ton of time and ask them to rebrand it lol. I went through the whole spiel of acting like I just bought a phone from them and had issues getting it connected. Wasted all of that time with the original rep to get transferred to customer care then go through it with them giving the imei etc for them to say "looks like you made your account with straight talk". I asked him about rebranding he said I can do that for you no problem.

Buy $9.99 basic phone plan from tracfone on ebay. You get the 15 digit code by email like 10 minutes later.
Download the tracfone app and use the support chat icon on the top right.
Tell them you bought the phone on straight talk but want to activate it with tracfone because you already have a plan pin.
They will setup an account for you with tracfone
You get an email to reset password for tracfone account, login, manage lines, activate with pin from ebay

Straight talk, Tracfone, Total wireless, Simple mobile and a few other brands are all owned by Verizon now. While the plans offered by each brand might be different, they all run on Verizon's network.

There was also a recent news about possible changes coming to these prepaid brands after November 2024. Not much details known.
There was a time when Verizon was so against mvno's that there were very few Verizon mvno brands, now Verizon acquired the mvno's and moving customers to it network.

At $139, and with the various cashback offers, this is a great bargain. I was even able to trade in my ancient A51 4G to Amazon for another $37!

The sound and picture are especially good. Unless you are a serious gamer, this would be more than sufficient for most users.

Going through hell trying to get one activated. Bought the $10 Tracfone plan on Ebay. Couldn't find how to get online chat going on tracfone website, so I called the 800 number. 2hrs later still no luck. They "rebranded" to tracfone, took the tracfone PIN, told me to power off, reset settings on and on.
On the phone, I get the verizon 5G service sign, but no calls could be made etc.

CSR #5 was the charm. Had to reprovision from the scratch. Now, after texting "UNLOCK" to 611611 response came back to the effect of "its your own device, contact manufacturer". So I had to call the unlock dept - the number was inside of that reply to my unlock text.
CSR said that since the phone was rebranded from Straight Talk, it now is showing as customer own device in their system, but I should not worry, they would be able to unlock me in 60 days anyways.

Sorry, I feel for you but glad it worked out in the end . This is a terrible company, probably the worst in the wireless industry.
That said unlocking is generally not a problem with them.

However their systems are full of security loopholes. Only last year they had thousands of phone numbers stolen i.e. scammers ported out numbers from their system without customer knowledge.
They also have been bleeding customers badly and long term survival is a question mark at least in the current form.
It's OK for a kids line or secondary phone but I would not trust them with a line where your number is tied to a bank, 2FA etc.
I suspect they are forced to run these deals cause there is no other way anyone would do business with them. And they are trying to ramp up the account volume before year closing.

eBay $10 TracFone plan OOS todayFrown.
BUT, Target has 15% discount on the $15 plan, and extra 5% if you pay with RedCard.

This particular variant of A54 is not good for AT&T. it was designed specifically for Verizon and omits key Att bands.

Earlier message (right in this thread) sez: ".... the reason this deal seemingly a great deal is also because it can be unlocked with minor work.... so u have a fully unlocked phone to use on any carrier. ...".
