You can also sync them with a computer/monitor using the free Hue Sync app. No HDMI box necessary in that scenario. I grabbed these for my daughter's PC to sync with movies and games.

What do people use these as primarily? Just mood lighting type of thing?

If you're willing to pay for the HDMI box, it does a great job of lighting the wall behind your TV in colors that change to reflect the colors on the screen. I didn't think I'd like the effect, but it is pretty awesome.

I use these as lights (left, top, right) behind my computer monitor. You can download the hue sync app on your pc and then sync to your display. Works great for mood lighting and gaming. I also have the hue sync box which I use for the same setup on my gaming TV. When it first came out it was trash but firmware updates have fixed my issues with it.

I use them to help light up my entire living room. I have these behind my couch against a wall, and combined with a hue strip lighting behind my TV and an a19 bulb in a floor lamp. Works really well and is fun to switch colors if desired.

Yes, but the app you will need to purchase costs $130. I opted for the $140 refurbished deal on the HDMI sync box at BestBuy instead.
Lmao no way. Thanks for saving me from purchasing these. Dear god $130 for an app

Careful with this. The HDMI box limits the signals that make it to the TV from what I've heard. Things like HDR and VRR.

I have some of these and I really wanted to get a sync box but I couldn't justify the price. There are knock-off devices with LED strips that seem pretty similar. I am curious if anyone has experience with both?

Heads up, I had to return these as they were emitting a high pitched noise when on. Turns out I wasn't the only one after reading reviews.

Be forewarned, they only have about a 6yr life, all and I mean all my hue lights have started failing within months of each other.
Lightstrips under my kitchen Cabinets 3 out of 4 strips have failed, regular bulbs in my bedroom, all 3 bulbs have disconnected and won't stay connected.
As much as they cost me you'd think they would have a longer use life.
I'm done with Phillips hue, going to Cync, almost twice as bright than hue on daylight full brightness setting

Cync is absolutely the worst smarthome brand I've ever used. They lose connection ALL the time and have to be factory reset to re-pair.

Is anyone else getting a "There is an error with this item and it cannot be purchased at this time. We apologize for the inconvenience." error message when trying to add to cart?

What does Cync use to communicate with?

Yes that's true.
The app used to (and may still may) cost $150 on the Samsung App Store. I considered it, but thought the box would be more useful as I use an AppleTV 4k and I need a pass through HDMI source.

Love these! I have one mounted about my monitor and I use it as a light for my webcam - works perfectly!

I have a hub. Will these work when casting video from android device to a chromecast ultra?
