I own both the Zojirushi Neuro Fuzzy 5.5 cup and the Induction Pressure 10 cup (NP-NCW 18). The Nuero Fuzzy is an excellent choice, but the Induction Cooker has other options like Jasmine Rice, and the texture of the rice taste better than cooking in White Rice or Quick cooking function. I've owned 3 different Tiger Rice Cookers, and Zojirushi is superior. I forgot to mention that both Zojitushi Fuzzy or Induction Pressure rice cooker doesn't smell bad, or change color after leaving it warm function for more than 48 hours. As for my Tiger Rice cookers, the rice smelled bad, and changed color after 16 hours.

This is the gold standard rice cooker across east and south Asian homes. Almost every friend's home I went to growing up had a zojirushi.

The neuro fuzzy logic chip allows the rice cooker to make fine adjustments to temp, time, and pressure to make the perfect rice every time. You can cook rice and keep it in the cooker for 3-4 days. My parents has had theirs for 20 years and it works as good as it did on day one.

I would consider this one of few buy it for life items.

Outdated? The roll up power cord for easy storage, the handles on an otherwise hot pot, the neuro logic that calculates water to rice on the fly is unmatched. Pressure cookers make inferior rice as it is the act of steaming and removing the moisture that makes those delicate rice grains stand out. Nobody makes better rice than Zojirushi.

It's kinda hard to fully explain. But if you believe your car is only to get you from point A to B, a high end cooker might not be for you. If you want to try to understand you could try to compare a high end made in Japan sing you songs rice cooker to a $20 Target rice cooker. I own a high end cooker, but honestly I haven't used a low end cooker to compare. But I'm more than happy with the results. Any type of rice I make comes out perfectly cooked. I can even set mine to have it ready at a certain time. Mine also has a "gaba" feature which supposedly increases nutrition in brown rice.
Honestly I'm a casual rice cooker. I guess what I have ( Zojirushi 10 cut induction) is built to last. But if you're thinking about buying one you should find what's best for you and your budget. If it's a $20 cooker that does what you need done, go for it.

Neuro Fuzzy uses a fuzzy logic algorithm to adjust as it cooks. If it detects excess water it'll run hotter, slower if not enough etc.

Induction allows the heating element to be near instant on/off, since the pot itself is the heating element.

Pressure allows the cooker to run hotter, since the boiling point of water is increased with pressure. This noticeably reduces cooking time.

It cooks rice extremely well. Just like buying a car. A Nissan versa would get you to a destination just like a 450k rolls Royce. But one does it better than the other. This is actually a mid level rice cooker. It can adjust the cooking based on the amount of water to rice ratio as it's not the same each and every time as you think it does. I assure you this cooks the rice evenly from top to bottom from 1 cup to whatever the stated maximum cup is. That's extremely hard for something like a cheapo rice cooker. The bottom will be more cooked while the top could be dryer. If you aren't an avid rice eater or one that eats it often there's literally no point buying it because this isn't for you. You could compare this to a toaster too. Why get a toaster when you can make toasted bread on a stovetop? Because a toaster does it better. Especially a nicer one.

Is this only for certain types of rice?

I make rice ~5 nights a week but mix it up between Jasmine and Basmati and toss some meat/veggies on top. I have no real affinity towards those two though besides Jasmine seems sticky and basmati more fluffy.
I see a lot of "sushi rice" in descriptions but don't think I'm going to make a lot of sushi any time soon.

My family and I consume a lot of rice many different ways. I've had this rice cooker for years and it's been perfect. Sure if you don't eat rice like that you can get by with a cheap off brand rice cooker. If you're a rice eater this is the brand you want. worth every penny if you're a daily rice eater. it will hold rice fresh and hot for about 3 days.

Regarding it looking outdated...for me, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. There's a reason this is a tried and true product that lasts decades in most cases. Reliability > Looks every time.
