What he is referring to is an issue with you have an older style fridge like a top/bottom classic style. The thermostat is in the fridge and the cooling is in the freezer and it blows some of the cooler air below to satisfy the fridge thermostat. This keeps the freezer much much colder than the fridge.

The problem is what if this setup is in an environment when its 40F to 30F? Well the fridge doesn't heat up very much and doesn't call for a cooling cycle very often, and in turn the freezer starts to warm up since it doesn't have its own thermostat and control. So the fridge will be at 35 or 40F inside, but the freezer will start to get closer to 25-30F which is bad for most frozen things. Typically you'll notice in ice cream or freeze pop which need to be closer to 0-5F for a good freeze.

If a unit has dual compressors and cooling systems, it's a non problem. But for units that only have 1, it can be an issue in the garage during the winter.

Mom has a Kenmore, made by Whirlpool, bought it about 8-10 years ago. The LED lights have been out for years, since about year 2, and the ice maker, too. The dispenser works, so she uses her standalone ice maker. Everything else works great.

Personal experience in sales, GE, Frigidaire and Samsung aren't great. Lots of issues. Whirlpool tends to last longer with less issues, but don't forget to clean out your coils. If you have lots of pets, especially with wood floors and if you don't constantly clean them, I recommend every 6 months. If you don't see much hair or dust, you can reduce the frequency. If you've never cleaned it, it is probably time. I used my leaf blower on my landlord's fridge, probably the first time ever after decades, there was a ton of dust on everything. If you can, push it to your back door and blow it out, or use a vacuum and long brush. It still won't be perfect, but will hopefully help.

Looks nice in store, got the GE with ice maker for $100 more. The Maytag is a bit narrower but I like the look of the handles.

The maytag is actually 35.88 inches wide, whereas the GE is 35.75 inches wide, making the maytag wider just barely

Love the clean door look, but I never want to go back to manually filling ice cube trays.

Doesn't everyone on SD have a separate ice maker by now?

Don't know this model but Maytag is not the same company many of us remember. Like TV brands, I believe the name rights were sold years ago. Whirlpool owns the name. Price seems excellent but always due your due diligence before $$ purchases. Whirlpool makes both good and bad models.
