The problem is what if this setup is in an environment when its 40F to 30F? Well the fridge doesn't heat up very much and doesn't call for a cooling cycle very often, and in turn the freezer starts to warm up since it doesn't have its own thermostat and control. So the fridge will be at 35 or 40F inside, but the freezer will start to get closer to 25-30F which is bad for most frozen things. Typically you'll notice in ice cream or freeze pop which need to be closer to 0-5F for a good freeze.
If a unit has dual compressors and cooling systems, it's a non problem. But for units that only have 1, it can be an issue in the garage during the winter.
Personal experience in sales, GE, Frigidaire and Samsung aren't great. Lots of issues. Whirlpool tends to last longer with less issues, but don't forget to clean out your coils. If you have lots of pets, especially with wood floors and if you don't constantly clean them, I recommend every 6 months. If you don't see much hair or dust, you can reduce the frequency. If you've never cleaned it, it is probably time. I used my leaf blower on my landlord's fridge, probably the first time ever after decades, there was a ton of dust on everything. If you can, push it to your back door and blow it out, or use a vacuum and long brush. It still won't be perfect, but will hopefully help.
