While this may have been true 10+ years ago, there are more recent side-by-side comparisons/reviews that show differently.

Norton is much more lightweight than it used to be and is actually just as efficient (if not more) than other top AV software.

Not sure how much MS has changed over the years, but I remember when MS was flunking "tests" and one of their reps even advised getting something else besides their built-in AV. I also remember when their AV was flagging the Chrome browser (and later some Chrome updates) as viruses.

If you are talking about hackers which is NOT your biggest threat that is a different story.

The biggest threat to home users are what they click on, pop ups, adult material, and malware.

Most hackers are not trying to hack a residential pc. There is not enough value. However, if you are worried about that you should buy a IDS or IPS from UNIFI.

There is a great black friday sell. I get hit sometimes, but its because of my own doing. Crawling the dark web etc..

I can tell you without a doubt hackers are not targeting people at home on a routine basis.

However, I provided your a resolution, what virus software would protect you against hacker attacks? Non that I know of. It is a hardware device.
