While this may have been true 10+ years ago, there are more recent side-by-side comparisons/reviews that show differently.

Norton is much more lightweight than it used to be and is actually just as efficient (if not more) than other top AV software.

Windows defender is more than sufficient.

I feel the same. Windows defender is sufficient. Even edge and chrome has built in security malicious sites. I bought a laptop that came with 1 year free subscription of McAfee, I uninstalled it the moment I setup my machine
McAfee was basically cancer on my machine

Past 2 real world tests listed, Norton performs better than the default Microsoft AV.

Latest av test - parity.
You forgot NAV has extra bonus feature; built-in Symantec adware pushing other Symantec products including their browser. It even ignores its own setting to turn off notifications.

That comment is coming from someone that does not understand Information Security. As someone that is Head of Cyber and Data Security for a Fortune 500 Company IT IS NOT.

You comment is like saying a screen door is sufficient for a front door LOL ApplauseApplauseApplauseApplauseApplauseApplause

Norton severely slows down your machine. Just use ad block and your pc/mac's built in OS antivirus software.
Will be fine for the majority of people and free.
There really is no need for 3rd party anti virus software.

So you should know hackers are your biggest threat and Norton does nothing to stop hackers.

Not sure how much MS has changed over the years, but I remember when MS was flunking "tests" and one of their reps even advised getting something else besides their built-in AV. I also remember when their AV was flagging the Chrome browser (and later some Chrome updates) as viruses.

If you are talking about hackers which is NOT your biggest threat that is a different story.

The biggest threat to home users are what they click on, pop ups, adult material, and malware.

Most hackers are not trying to hack a residential pc. There is not enough value. However, if you are worried about that you should buy a IDS or IPS from UNIFI.

There is a great black friday sell. I get hit sometimes, but its because of my own doing. Crawling the dark web etc..

I can tell you without a doubt hackers are not targeting people at home on a routine basis.

However, I provided your a resolution, what virus software would protect you against hacker attacks? Non that I know of. It is a hardware device.

Just a heads up if you do purchase the Norton.. remove the credit card info they will demand from you in order to make the product work... it's actually pretty easy you just go into the norton account they'll have you create (or log into the existing norton account you might already have), turn off auto renew and delete the credit card info, pay careful attention to the prompts on the bottom I recall them highlighting the "don't cancel " type prompts in yellow to try to get the unwary clicker to select it by mistake Stick Out Tongue .. I've done this repeatedly with my Norton purchases without any problems and Norton still works.

If you don't do this Norton can and will charge you some horribly large amount when your subscription requires automatically and without your approval .. I've heard horror stories about how Norton will refuse to back down and won't reverse the charges so definitely remove that credit card info !
Or use Privacy.com or their app to create virtual cards and set the max per transaction charge. After the initial payment you can change it to $1.
